NV3500 or NV4500 for C-30

got a 1-ton dually with a 4-speed granny. has the big hump tunnel and all the original equipment and low-low gears. 60mph = 3200rpm

what are the pros and cons of the later five speed trans?

install difficulty? shifter location? hydraulic clutch conversion?
towing and highway driving benefits? which would you run, 3500 or 4500?

need to do this, the dually has become the daily.

thanks, clem

Re: NV3500 or NV4500 for C-30

in a 1 ton I would go with the 4500 its cast iron and heavier built than a 3500, do you want to run a hyd clutch ?? if not you can change the front bearing retainer and run a mech clutch, installation is easy depending on what year the tranny is early years use the same bell housing as your sm465. and if you have a later year tranny you can get the bellhousing from several diff places I like the adv. adpt. as far as the shifter location its about 3 to 4 inches straight back from your sm465. you will basicly have exactly what you have now BUT with a overdrive. tho first (granny) is not quite as low
the 3500 has a intergrated bell housing and you would HAVE to use a hyd. clutch and its not near as strong, hope this helps Coop

Re: NV3500 or NV4500 for C-30

thanks guys. 4500 it is...
i think i want to convert to the hyd. clutch.
do quite a bit of towing and trailer backing seems to wear out the mechanical throw-out bearing in just a couple of years. driving skills may be an issue also, lol. i buy the best american made bearings but doesn't seem to make much difference. maybe the hyd. system will be better.

will try to find a 4500 with all the brackets and the cylinder pieces included.

thanks again, clem

Re: NV3500 or NV4500 for C-30

here's my C-30. some have seen this pic.
i have checked cl in the area and a couple of the salvages nearby and this NV4500 may be tough to find.

is there a better year to look for that may be more available.
the NV3500 from half tons is easier to find.

anybody got a 4500 out there. need all attachments too.

thanks, clem

clem, you have a very nice C-30 there. I really like the dually/flatbed setup. Thought about makin my C-20 into a flat. But then i looked for bed. Not to many around here. Or cheap either.

Oh, BTW, I love your truck, if I had a need, that is how I would set one up.
