my off road passion
Well, I love the classics, but my first passion has always been the sand.
Here are a few of the toys I have built over the years. Who else has a dirt fetish?? |

Re: my off road passion
I've never been in one. Is four wheel drive not necessary for those?

Re: my off road passion
I imagine you've got a bit more land than us in Michigan, but there's about 2-3 on any given day at Silver Lake Sand Dunes... It's only 450 acres of sand open to the public, not quite a desert. Sweet rides you built all of those?? Props to you! I've got a Raptor and we've taken plenty of our trucks to the dunes, usually once or twice a year. But I'm with ya, off road is a passion that I'm not sure if classics can ever surpass.

I assembled most of them, but the frames were built by several different builders. This is only a handfull, I owned about 35 long travel cars and I build the fiberglass bodys for a few different styles of manx buggys. Here are some examples. |

Re: my off road passion
Those would be most cool with a fat 6.2l LS in them!
What motor do you throw in there? Vdubs only?

Re: my off road passion
Very cool buggies. I recently purchased a Redline Revolt Xl, turbo'd it and have been riding in Waynoka, Oklahoma. Most fun I've ever had. I wish that I lived closer to the dunes so I could warrant buying an LS buggy but I don't ever see that happening. I may try to head to Glamis in the fall and if I make it out there I'll let you know and maybe we could meet up. Mike

Re: my off road passion
Spent a huge portion of my life at Glamis! Had a nice duneable jeep for a while, then switched to quads. Built a golf cart with a 660 Raptor motor, still have it. Always wanted to build a car, but there is enough with us I always have a ride.
Those high fender Manx you have got me thinking again, looks like I will possibly fit in it. |

Re: my off road passion
powerdriver, I'd like more pics of that. I see the starter is up high making me wonder what kind of trans it has.
wouldn't be too hard to fab one up at home. I wonder if I really need a new boat, maybe I should build one of these.

Re: my off road passion
Looks like an 091 vw bus trans with a high torque starter. You can build the trans to handle 300 hp, but it will cost you upwards of $4000. I have use that trans setup on a couple dozen builds and they work well.
