Is $7K too much for a body job and paint

My blazer needs some floor board rust fixed, truck doors cut down and support put in by latch. Some dents fixed in gate and fenders. He would paint all outside and dash area and kick panel inside, paint doors inside and out, gate inside and out. Told me 3-5 months to do it. Just curious, if this would be high? Thanks Randy

What kind of materials is he using? If he uses good quality stuff, and sprays it base clear, the materials will cost at least $3500. And then you account for masking paper, tape, welding wire, gas, filler, etc. $7k may sound high, but really isn't bad if the guy does top notch work.

Ryan, he does base coat, clear coat. I've seen some of his work, its pretty good. He does some older cars when he doesn't have insurance claims. He said he was thinking 100 hours of work on it, probably 6-7K to do it all

I paid 3K for my base clear with about 30 hours of body work needed. It was not a business though, a retired guy from his home shop.

Re: Is $7K too much for a body job and paint

I'll charge $3,000 plus for a base/clear shoot with minimal body work. It's $2,000+ just for materials anymore. Depends on many things, but I can save someone a little money with cheaper brand materials.
If welding and panel replacement is involved the price goes up. The hours add up. I'd say that shop is about average price for what you are getting. Nothing cheap about paint and bodywork anymore.

Re: Is $7K too much for a body job and paint

I too think that's a reasonable price. Paint and body is not something you want to have done twice, have it done right the first time.
Start saving some cash from parts sales and tell your wife it cost $4,000.

Just remember, it will be the opposite of tearing one down. It shouldn't take you more than 3 or 4 hours to reassemble...........

With a good torch you can do it in 2 hours. If it doesn't fit right just trim a little off the edges.

Re: Is $7K too much for a body job and paint

its is a very good price for paint and body work together. i have friends that do paint jobs for show winning cars and they charge 6 to 10 grand on a paint job alone not including body work. i know body men who do work for 3 to 5 depending on how the body is all including materials. a good paint job is only as good as the body work. the body work is the key..

It sounds like a fair estimate to me, all things considered. A good base coat/clear coat will probably run close to 1k on it's own for that much paint. And as stated above, the panels, wire, etc, etc all add up very quickly.

The guy who helped me on C-30 had around 130 hours into it (it was a rough estimate, but I know it was definately over 100). He basically didn't have to take anything apart, aside from a few small things, and I did all the cleaning and masking. He welded some patches on one fender, a door, one rocker, a small patch on the floor and some more by the kick panels. There were plenty of dents in the back, one good one on the fender, and a huge one on the roof, so uni-spotting and bondo took awhile too. And that was just on my cab... So yeah 100 hours is definately a good ballpark if hes well experienced and works full time on it.

Re: Is $7K too much for a body job and paint

Sounds like a deal. I have been hunting off/on for 5 yrs in the Seattle area for a bargain on a paint job worthy of my K5. The rust repair is done - only light body work needed. Best price I have been quoted is $6K with me doing disassembly, wet sand, and reassembly. The guy was a pro but still worked out of his home shop.

Actually sounds like a fair deal Randy, especially with rust replacement because they have a lot on the line interms of fitment concerns. I know you are like me and the fitment of the new sheetmetal will have to be spot on.

The price sounds good depending on the color, But I would expect it to take 6-8 months if he said 3-5.

Re: Is $7K too much for a body job and paint

I agree with the above posts. My 72 short bed was all blown apart, had been media blasted and needed minimal work. Less than 20 hours. BC/CC in Victory Red was $7K in 2006. That didn't include the tear daown or reassemble.

Very few shops want to mess with them these days. The insurance work is too lucrative.

Good luck with it.
