New To The Board

Hello All. Though I've been reading posts for a while now I have yet to post myself. These forums have really been the catalyst for me to get my 72 K10 fixed up a little. I've started prepping it today for paint but the rain drove me inside so I thought I'd share a photo with y'all. My grandfather bought the truck new in December of 71 (the manufacture date is 11/71 so she's officially 40 years old). My grandfather passed several years ago and I ended up with his truck. When my grandmother passed recently my mother was going through her papers and found the original dealer's sale receipt for the truck and the original loan paperwork! The truck was listed at $4229 and my grandfather received $600 trade in for his '66 Chevy 4x4. Final sale price, $3810.45, including tax! She's gotten pretty rough around the edges in the last 40 years but she still starts right up and runs like a top. I got most of the chrome trim off in preparation for the paint but I still have to get the "Custom/10" badges off, which it looks like I'll have to at least drop the inner fender to get to the nuts. Any advise on this? This is getting long, so lets just get to the photo.

Welcome Rifleman!

That's neat you got your grandpa's truck.

It doesn't look like it needs paint to me.

You are on the right track with the emblem nuts. May have to remove the inner fender or unbolt the inner fender at the back edge, get that one bolt at the bottom of the outer fender, and reach up from below to get to the nuts.

Great story glad it stayed in the family, nice looking truck too!
dropping the inner fender is the best way to get to those nuts

I agree with dropping the inner fender to get to the nuts.You'll probably want to to replace the inner fender on the passenger side anyway since most are rusted thru under the battery.I say most in jest since I have yet to see one that wasn't.No sense in painting then having to tear it apart to fix something like that.

Thanks all....

Stomper: Unfortunately it does need paint, the upper surfaces (hood, fenders, roof) are showing rust and the poor truck has to live outside now, no garage for the mean time.

PanelDeland: I checked that inner fender on your advise...solid as a rock!

I found a couple week spots on the drivers door and decided to sand them down and potentially weld up the weakness...what I found...bondo...I guess my grandpa had some work done at some point. I never would have thought by looking at it. It's ok though, I'm not restoring for a show truck and no fancy mods, just keeping it in good shape.

Also found some rust at the back/bottom of the cab, directly below the gas filler. I remember reading here somewhere about a drain hole so I got that accomplished between rain showers.
