Cruise Control: TroubleShooting

I search this forum and didn't see much. I've recently picked up a 87' c10 that has cruise.

It doesn't work. I found one thread that said to inspect the wires coming from the cruise lever/switch on the steering column. It appears to be okay.

All to say, after looking at my fuse box, I can't seem to identify what fuse maybe the cruise is running off of.

Note: The Cruise lever on the steering column: The turn signals work, Only High & Medium speed setting for wypers work, the low/intermediate speed doesnt work.

Maybe it's still the lever wiring, even though I don't see fray wires?

Any suggestions..

If no one has been messing around with the system before I would chek the wires comming from the lever again, and the contacts up in the head of the lever. I had problems with the cruise in a couple of corvettes. And it turned out to be the lever both times, I heard that this is quite common on GM´s.

Also, (and this is just my opinion, I could be wrong) check all vacuum lines . I removed some of the vacuum line under the hood , that I had no Idea what they were for and now my Cruise con. doesn't work either. Could be worth looking at in your case also

I could not find a Vacuum Line diagram/layout in my Haynes manual. Any pics of these lines so I can verify?

On my old 87, the cruise never worked until i got fed up and took some stuff apart. I took the big vacuum can on the engine, the one that actually pulls the throttle, found nothing wrong, cleaned it and reassembled it and then it worked like new from then on.

wiring diagram is essential, and a common understanding of its workings, dont forget the basics, like, brake swith, if its out of adjustment ( SOME use seperate cruise/brake light sw.) cable on throttle, vac. lines, like some already mentioned, get out your trusty test light or dvom and start checking for continuity when operating switch on and off, wiring diagram is helpful but not necessary if you know which connector under dash, usually a goofy looking terminal thin wires into a connector directly under knee bolster. also you power circuitry to make sure you have power and ground, but your simple basics should be inspected first, like brake sw. adjustment, cable, connectors, good luck

How did you take the lever off? I had the same problem and am trying to replace the lever....I heard there is a connection to check as well between the level and the harness in the column??

Excellent thread, and very timely.

When I first got my '87 back from my father in law the cruise did not work. That ended up being the wiring in the turn signal stalk (broken wires right at the base, near where it goes into the column. Replacing the lever fixed it and all was well.

Now, after a couple years, it's stopped working again. I haven't dug into it yet, but am subscribing to this thread so I can follow along, and also in case I find something new.

Anybody know where I can get a lever for my 83? It seems to be a 1 year only impossible to get part.

Any idea what's unique for '83?

I'm guessing there is some feature (like windshield wipers moved to the stalk) that maybe you could work around.

Mine is inoperable in my 83. But I have a newer column. I will have to try the switch in mine

83 wiper switch is on the dash, the blinker stalk is just cruise - so I think that is the difference. Later models have combo wiper and cruise.

That's where I was heading - perhaps you could use the later stalk and the wiper features on the lever would be non-functioning; or, you could even mix and match the components to create the lever you need.

Just thinkin' out loud -

Edit: BUT - maybe then the electrical functions/connectors would not match. I dunno.

I have wiper switch on the dash and the stalk. When I got it, the wipers worked off the dash. I think it was relatively easy making them work off the stalk.

I've been looking for info as it relates to everything else
i'm about to do this to,get the wipers,dimmer
88 or 89 to 78
i havn't found a "sure thing" but I got side tracked getting a tach cluster lol
but those seemed were braking all the time,the cruise there in some later ones

my plan was to remove it all from the the 89 wires n all
figure it out that way,
