Door seals too thick?

I just put new door seals in my 79 GMC and now the doors are very hard to close. They seal good, but seem like they are too thick. Has any had this problem and what did you do about it.

It will take them a while to break in. If you look at your old seals, you'll notice they look smashed.

Centipede hit the nail on the head. Give them time to break in.

Re: Door seals too thick?

If you got "import" door seals they are not as good as OEM or Softseal brand. My Taiwanese door seals bought off Ebay have always been too thick and never compressed enough to work properly. You get what you pay for in this arena.

Re: Door seals too thick?

I remember as a kid when my Dad bought a brand new 1978 C10 SWB Fleet 250/3 on the tree truck. The doors were tough to close, the seals on these truck had always made the door a bit tougher to close. Give it some time and the seals will flatten out a bit.

Re: Door seals too thick?

Putting in new door seals will make the doors harder to close but I wouldn't think that it would make a very big difference. You might have other issues if your doors are super hard to close. These trucks were pretty airtight when all the seals were good, try cracking a window and then check the door. Also if your door hinge pins are worn your door will sag and it will be difficult to close.

Re: Door seals too thick?

Hey 79beater, did you put GMC door seals on your chevy cause i think they are better made and might be made thicker for a better seal? If you don't want to go to chevy seals you can hurry the process up by taping some thin rope to the seals and slam the door shut and leave it in the hot sun for a few days. that will squish em a little more. I see you live in TN too so message me if you need some help I can show ya how to do it.

Re: Door seals too thick?

Try oiling them, i put a set in my truck and they were hard to close, put some 2 stroke oil on a rag and rubbed down the seals real good and they closed 10 times easier. Maybe some teflon spray would work better.
