Dwell meter
Ok its been way to long since I used my dwell meter. Its a mac tools meter and it has a green clamp and a black clamp. I cant remember what goes where.

Black to a ground and the green should go to the negative terminal on the coil that goes to the points. Mine is red and black. Dwell on a V8 is 28-32 degrees at idle speed, I believe.

I always went with 30 degrees, adjusting the dwell angle as it ran. Get one of the 1/8th inch allen tools that are mounted in a spring extension to a screwdriver-type handle....assuming you don't have one. That's the nice thing about the "window" in the distributor cap...so you can stick the tool in and adjust your points.

Always set dwell to the low side of the dwell range they give you.
The plastic or fiber rubbing block will wear down and decrease the point gap, which will show as an increase in dwell reading. The new points have a rubbing block with sharp corners that will wear down and polish smooth after a few hundred miles. The distributor specs say .019" gap for new points. After a few hundred miles the rubbing block will wear down to where the gap will be closer to .017", which is where they say to set Used points. The point block will wear very little from that point on in its life. A little grease on the cam will help.
