Brothers has the correct harness's for that conversion. I found the wiring to be much less painless to just purchase the proper harness's than try and change or repair the old ones.

Re: basic wiring for engine

So you've installed an engine and didn't mark the wires before you pulled the other one, eh? Or did someone else pull the other engine?

Anyways, since your truck original didn't come with HEI, you'll need to run the positive wire that used to go to your coil to the new HEI unit. It should have power when the key is in the on and start positions. No other position should give that wire power. If I am not mistaken, on the HEI itself there are two prongs and the one closest to the firewall is for the power. The other prong is for a tach.

As for the other wires, you will more than likely have to go through a process of elimination to find out which goes where. I am sure there are plenty of wiring diagrams online for this. Good luck!

Re: basic wiring for engine

Today the process will start,it looks like enough information off the wiring harness diagrams to complete the job.the truck previous owner had added after market guages as well.good for me just have to go one wire at a time.the 80s 350 engine i put in has hei distrubutor.I will update you guys on the progress and any problems.this will be the last step to firing the engine.still have to remove the tank and clean it out.But could disconnet the pump and gravity feed gas straight in.We will see how far i get today.

Re: basic wiring for engine

Thats the horn relay, not a volt reg. It is used as a junction from the battery to the ignition switch. You should have a 10g wire(use red) from bat+ to the horn relay terminal. The red wire from there should go to your fuse block or ign switch; sorry, cant remember, possibly both(?). The nut/terminal on the back of the alternator needs to feed to the bat+. Usually the red wire from the plug on the side of the alt wraps back and attaches to the same terminal.

If you have all these tied together it should cause electricity to power up just about everything.

Re: basic wiring for engine

Ignition switch......purple should be starter solenoid(S terminal). Pink is usual points and/or other electric such as dash/wipers/radio/etc. No clue what the green and orange do.......

Re: basic wiring for engine

The 'black' wire is actually white....look closely. Dont hook it up. I think this is for an alt light on newer cars/trucks.

Starter; big ass red to big ass terminal on solenoid....purple from switch to 'S' terminal on solenoid.

You should also make sure your engine is grounded to the frame as well as the body of the truck grounded to frame.

Look at the cap on the HEI...it will say bat+ and tach. Run a switched wire to the bat+terminal.
