Worlds largest crane in my backyard

I know its not truck related, but it is extremely "manly" and thought some of you might be interested

I'm working at Intel here in AZ and they will have the worlds largest mobile crane on site for the next year while we build (2) new "Super Fabs" on site. This thing is crazy huge...

They do not allow cameras on site, but I was able to get a few picks with the camera phone.

Intel's new $5B semiconductor factory, called FAB 42 in Chandler has the distinction of being built using the worlds largest "mobile" crane. The yellow Sarens SGC 120, nicknamed "Big Benny," was shipped to Chandler from Belgium starting in June and assembly of this massive crane was completed this week. It cost over $1m and 100 truckloads in (3) months to move it to the site. It will soon be employed in lifting the larger components onto the factory building. The crane is mounted to the ground on a circular, 120 foot diameter set of tracks for the duration of the job. The main boom is 426 ft long with a jib that extends another 295 ft, for a maximum height of 689 ft. It can lift as much as 3500 tons. The blue part on the back is (8) stacks of cargo containers filled with sand. The crane is adjacent to a 4 story building (Fab32).

This picture was taken over (4) miles away...

These are from the construction parking lot over a 1/2 mile away. Fab 32 is on the left.

This is from the opposite side over a 1/2 mile away.

They are making the first "lift" on Monday and I hope to get video of it

Re: Worlds largest crane in my backyard

WOW! Cool! You can bet that thing is commanding big money. Down here in the Gulf coast area in the refinries we have plenty of good sized cranes, and they charge 1 million an hour even when they arent lifting.

Oops, I meant a million a day. Still a lot of money lol

LOL, ya from what I heard, it's costing $300k a day. It was built specifically for Intel.

However much it is he's earning every nickle. Operating something like that is a highly skilled job. One little misque on his part can have disasterous results.

Queen Creek and Dobson in Chandler. You can see it from I-10 and the 202 San Tan. The picture from 4 miles away was from Pecos Road and the 202.

Most definitely, I work for an electrical contractor out there and we just had a "Crane and Rigging" class last week, and I don't want anything to do with it due to the liability that's on their shoulders. Good reason that they are paid so well...

Awesome! You guys pretty busy in your area? Arizona was hit pretty bad on the job end of the recession... If it were not for Intel, I'm not sure that I'd be working...

Re: Worlds largest crane in my backyard

We were also hit hard, I've spent most of this year unemployed. The months I did work, I worked 7-12's so was able to catch up, and there are calls on the books right now but all for 40 hour jobs. I'm kind of waiting for the overtime to kick off again. But it is fortunate that the work kicked off again, because for 5 months there was not one job to be had. It gets interesting when unemployment starts running out, lol

Re: Worlds largest crane in my backyard

To make this thread 60-66 specific:

at a lift capacity of 3500 tons this crane could lift 1,891.89 stock fleetside c10's. So we'll call it 1891, and one parts truck hahahaha. That's a whole lot of chevy

That should still be there until the end of next year or 2013. The difference between that one and the one here is that the one here has more lifting capacity. I personnaly think that the Oregon site (D1D) and Arizona (Ocotillo) are trying to "one up" each other...

At least that's how they talk around here. Here's a quote from a conversation that I had yesterday with an Intel employee, "Well, the crane at D1D maybe a little taller than ours, but that can't say it's bigger than ours" These guys crack me up

Re: Worlds largest crane in my backyard

Not very descriptive but the only thing that comes to mind is.... " WOW" !! Before I retired from the Boeing Company I used to operate and hook for the Boeing Flight Line Transportation section. We used Grove rough terrain cranes with capacities of 15 ton up to 45 ton and one Terex crane that was a 65 tonner. That crane makes them look like Matchbox toys. I can only imagine what the operator makes wage wise. The " hooker " as we called the person actually giving either hand or radioed signals has an equal if not greater responsibility in actually "placing" the load in tight areas. Sometime used to get in a spot where the backside was pulling up seat covers so tight you could taste vinyl. Thanks for posting this one. Would love to see a video of that operating.

Re: Worlds largest crane in my backyard

I"ve spent the last 35 yrs on major construction projects like that, I always enjoy topping that hill at 5:50am or whatever and seeing a forest of cranes. I'm a pipefitter, and have rigged and flagged alot also.

Nowadays the big ones are computerized. I saw an article in a crane magazine where a Danish? manufacturer demonstrated a new crane by picking up a smaller (maybe 100t) one and using that to push a cork into a wine bottle. Fascinating, to me at least.

Thanks for posting. BTW, whos the general on your project, and who's got the pipe? I'm sure there are several. I need a job!
