but anyways, after i finished my truck build and debuted it to all my co workers at company function quite a few people said I needed the 'mandatory' gun rack.

Re: Gun rack

There are several posts on people trying to figure out what the gun rack holes are for. Here is a link to mine, but there are probably some better ones.

Re: Gun rack

Around here, you fail the safety inspection with out a gun rack. I have a newer style overhead 2 gun rack that's still in a box if you want photos or measurements. I also had one one time that went where the sun visors go. They both take up a lot of room.

Yes if you could I'd like photos and measurements .... I was told by a couple of buddies at work that the overhead take up more space but would prefer that over getting pulled over everyday by the local police for a shotgun in the rear window

Re: Gun rack

Some of my favorite memories of my dads '64 involve a shotgun in the gun rack. I need to find one for nostalgia sake.

Re: Gun rack

I just go to the junk junkyard to find mine. It doesn't bother anyone to have a gun in the rack around town.

They still sell them at academy sports store. They are like 10bucks or so... I'm after the style that mounts to the roof/ sun visor area ..

They also work great for carrying an umbrella.

Re: Gun rack

On several of my prior trucks, I had my upholstery man sew a sleeve to the front of my seat that would hold one long gun. It kept the gun from getting scratched and when the doors are closed, you can't see it.

I know you asked about overhead gun racks, I just thought I would throw another option your way. Since being a cop for to many years, I've found that in many cases if a crook can't see it he is less likely to steal it. Also, we had a deputy or two put gun racks on their cage (behind their head). They found out after a sudden stop that a Remington 870 will knock you out. Sorry to blather on, but if behind your head or over your head make sure you use the BIG screws and secure the gun to the rack with a strap or bungie of some kind.

Re: Gun rack

My '72 has the mandatory farmer racks still in it lol. Growing up it either held a .22 or a 12 gauge all the time. I had a '76 that the PO put a 3 gun rack that was supposed to mount over the window behind the seat. Pain in the butt to get the gun out in a hurry but at least most people didn't know there was any guns in it (didn't have to worry about them getting stolen!)

Hell, in California you have to go through a background check and a 15 day waiting period to submit the paper work to think about buying a gun rack.

Nothing illegal about a shotgun or rifle in the truck. Now a bazooka......might raise an eyebrow. I'll get some pics and measurements for you in the next day or 2. Or scan the instructions. The one I have is carried by Cabella's, was ordered for me, but I don't like it, so didn't mount it in the 2010. I had one years ago that went right where the sun visors are, was carpeted inside, and a lip to keep it from falling out. It did fall out a time or 2 on really bad roads (or lack of road).

Re: Gun rack

Here's some pics. I think it would work great in an older truck. There's not as much headroom in the newer trucks, so I never mounted it when they got me the 2010. This is a good one, though. Locking straps and padded area to keep it off your head. And you can always use a cable lock to secure them to each other or possibly to a seat belt bolt. These were purchased at Cabella's, not sure how much.

Re: Gun rack

Mine has a floor piece mounted on the passager floorboard and a piece attached on the dash. Rifle rides straight up and yes I have been stopped to have the PO PO check to see if the gun is unloaded.
