Best upgrade option for Headlights and tail lights???

Hey guys I want to get better headlights and possibly better tail lights.

My stock wiring harnesses are perfectly fine but if I need to upgrade to a better harness in order to run better lights then I will consider it.

For the headlights:
Should I just get bran new headlight and parking light lenses with different bulbs?

Should I get a better wiring harness and go with some sort of high output lights?

For the tail lights:
I was thinking of getting the LEDs but if just getting a different bulb will inprove the brightness of the light I would rather do that.

I just want my lights to be brighter and clearer than the 30 year old lights I have now. I dont want to blind people but I dont want to drive blind either.

Any info or input yall have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Before you do anything else with headlights, you should make this upgrade.

Re: Best upgrade option for Headlights and tail lights???

Before you start upgrading the bulbs themselves in your headlights, your going to want to upgrade your Headlight Wiring harness. Because your OE harness will not allow the new headlight bulbs (or your current bulbs for that matter) with enough voltage to allow them to run at 100%. The way the headlight system is currently set up, is that the headlights draw there power from the switch in the dash through old small 18-16 gauge wire.

We offer a Heavy Duty Headlight Harness for the 73-87 Chevy trucks that is 100% Plug n' Play, and utilizes HD relays that draw the power from your battery to supply your headlights with the full 13.8V+ they need to run at 100% intensity, through heavy duty 14 Gauge wire. We manufacture these harness, and If your interested in a HD Headlight Harness, feel free to contact us via PM and we'll be more then happy to help!

As far as the bulbs themselves go, your going to want to upgrade those as well. The quality of the aftermarket housings varies from manufacture to manufacture. There is not necessarily a difference between a $40 set of headlight housings and a $100 set of headlight housings, so simply use your discretion when finding a set that suits your tastes. HOWEVER make sure you choose a headlamp housing that is DOT & SAE approved, and also has a glare shield over the bulb. This WILL help focus the light much better, as well as greatly reduces glare for oncoming traffic! For Halogen headlight bulbs I would recommend the Sylvania Silverstar Ultras, they are the best Halogen bulb on the market in my opinion. HID's are another viable option, that you may also want to look into.

For tail lights, LED's usually provide a very big increase in light output. The circuit board style LED's that usually replace the whole lens or insides are generally brighter then the the drop in 1157 style LED bulbs. With that being said, the 1157 LED bulbs are also much brighter then the standard bulbs if you go with a quality LED that utilizes 3 chip SMD LED's. As these provide 3X the output of a standard glass LED, and also provide a much more intense & even light spread!

Take a read through this article, it should help answer some of your questions as well: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=491436

Hope that helps!

Re: Best upgrade option for Headlights and tail lights???

right now im upgrading my headlights too. I started out by buying hella 4x6? (not quite positive on the size) halogen capsule headlights so i could run h4 hids but then i found some universal projector units, theyre basically projectors that you have to make fit so im retrofitting the projectors to fit inside those headlights for my 85
