vin dilemma

have a friend selling his 55.1 on ebay, you may have seen it. he is listing his vin as follows: 611010626L6

I sent him a note to tell him i think he's got the wrong number off the truck - the 55.1 3100 vin should start with "H55"

He said that the 611.... # is what is on his Title for VIN.

3 questions:
Where is the VIN located on the 55.1 (I don't have one)?
Should it in fact start with H55?
ANY idea what the 611...etc # could be off of?

Thanks folks.

Re: vin dilemma

As long as he has a valid title and the number matches a number, original or assigned by the State, on the vehicle he should be good. Could be the truck came from another State that way, was drug out of the desert and reconstructed from different cab/frame combo. I think that year of truck may have used the engine number as the VIN and if its gone then it may have been assigned too.

Re: vin dilemma

Hmm. Very interesting, thanks guys. Learn something new every day.
Main reason I'm asking is cuz I almost bought a 54 when I lived on the east coast. nice old faded paint, good shape work truck. It had 54 emblems, but then I noticed it had an open driveline, etc... Truck had a 54 VIN "on" the truck and the title was for a 55. Guy had an "extra" vin tag he said came with the truck. Whole thing got too fishy for me - and I HATE dealing with DMV. So I passed. This current guy seems very legit, he has it on ebay. I was talking to him about buying it before it was on ebay then decided I better stop buying toys for a few years - gonna have to move again soon and I'd be piling up the shipping cost. 3 more PCS moves and I'd have doubled the price of the truck.... But it was exactly what I was lookin for. 55.1 3 window 3100. Faded paint, the works. Badly rusted floor due to cowl vent, but it really was right up my alley. I'll find another one once I settle down somewhere. This movin around every few years kinda stinks for a car nut. Thanks again gents, much appreciated.
