67-68 Grille Hoops

does anyone know what the original hoops were made out of? Is it the same that the new aftermarket are made of? I know the originals are fairly heavy and thick. Thanks guys

Re: 67-68 Grille Hoops

Just stuck a magnet to my OEM ones and it stuck so I'm saying steel. Didn't stick to my aftermarket ones.

There are two different types
One appears chrome and the other is painted from the factory
The factory painted ones can be chromed and the others will need to be replaced\restored.

Other folks will chime in an verify this

A lot of folks want the factory painted ones to strip and chrome for a better look

From the factory there were two types,
The shiney ones were aluminum, the painted one were steel. All of the aftermarket ones I have seen are aluminum.

My favorite thing to do is use the painted steel ones and have them chrome plated.

What would a guy expect to be charged to have a set chromed? How did they come out? Just curious trying to compare a set being powdercoated while I decide.

Re: 67-68 Grille Hoops

Chrome plating has gone way up since I did my last ones, I would guess some where in the neighborhood of $150-$175 each
I recently did have a pair powdercoated in "near chrome" and did not like it. I was told by my powdercoated that the problem is the near chrome itself looks good but it does not have any UV protection so if it going to be out in the weather they have to clear coat over the top and it turns out looking just like anodized aluminum

Re: 67-68 Grille Hoops

I thought about having a set chromed, then found out the cost...

Ended up picking up a set of NOS aluminums for $160 or so... they come up every once in awhile.

The aftermarket one's are cheap and flimsy but will do the job for most guys.
