88 Suburban--shattered tailgate window

Saturday I was loading up the Suburban for a run to the local dump. The tailgate, when I initially closed it, hung up on some cardboard, I moved it and shut the tailgate. Then I heard the little pieces of glass falling into the bottom of the tailgate. Yup, busted rear window.

I have no idea how it happened, and now the tailgate is jammed shut. I took off the panels and guess I'll have to pull the rods to manually open the tailgate.

Have any of you had a rr window shatter, and what caused it? I'd hate to get a new piece of glass only to see this happen again.

Thanks in advance,

Kurt

I had my door glass shatter on me not too long ago closing the door. Not fun at all.

Re: 88 Suburban--shattered tailgate window

I recently broke my rear glass on my 1986 Suburban ... My side latches were loose so when I closed mine one side caught and the other side didn't , so I slamed it harder hoping it would catch .. then heard the shattering glass as it fell into the gate . @%#$^ !!!!! Had tinted glass , but found cheap clear replacement if it happens again ...

Check the clearances around your window channels, most auto glass will not shatter if hit on the face, but on an edge it will explode. I would look for a stray bolt or exposed point that my have blown the glass. If you care to head south, I have a tinted glass you can have as a leftover from my crew cab conversion.
