Powder Coating Costs?
Just picked up a front cross member from a 71 for the disc brake swap. I was curious what you guys have paid to get a crossmember and control arms powder coated?

Re: Powder Coating Costs?
For the upper and lowers, I paid about $100.00, but I had them blasted prior so all he had to do was clean them and shoot.

Re: Powder Coating Costs?
Keep in mind that powder coating costs will vary a bit from area to area. Also, not all powder coating is equal. Just as with liquid paint, preparation is very important to the durability of the finished product. IMO abrasive blasting as the prep for powder coating is the absolute best.

Re: Powder Coating Costs?
I paid $400 to coat my front crossmember and rear axle housing. The uppers and lowers are a two stage reflective chrome with a clear top coat. I did the spindles and springs myself at my shop, but left the big stuff to the pros. Also included in that price was the front sway bar, all steering linkage and the rear Lincoln 9" housing.
I think if I was just coating the cross member and the arms $200 would be a good price. My powder coater is very good and takes the time to zinc coat the items first to give it is really good rust preventer if something gets chiped.

Re: Powder Coating Costs?
Is that zinc coating a powder or is it electroplated?

Re: Powder Coating Costs?
I had wheels powder coated at Acme powder coating in Van Nuys. 5 wheels (split rims) for 165 and that was including media blasting them first. Every time I’m there people are bringing entire cars to have media blasted. They are behind the Budweiser plant.

Re: Powder Coating Costs?
I have never asked. I will find out. Usually he asks me if it is going to be in the elements a lot or outside, then asks if I want it zinced first. Doesn't add much to the cost, but I have had chips on some of the zinced stuff and it does not rust as fast as other non coated products.

Re: Powder Coating Costs?
I've sand blasted 30 + Motorcycle frames and had them powdercoated and never had any trouble. I'd like to see a item this happened to!

Re: Powder Coating Costs?
Had a rear axle that this happened to and they re blasted and coated it fixing the problem.
I am curious what the company near you does to prep the steel, what if it is rusty?

Re: Powder Coating Costs?
a zinc rich powder coat primer... is probably what was done. $100 bucks is a good price. $400.00 is also very fair price for the front end assy and the rear end.

Re: Powder Coating Costs?
The powder coater I use has always abrasive blasted 90% of the parts they coat. And they have been in the powder coat business for over 25 years. I have not seen any issues caused from embeded blast media.
