What radio to use?

My dash has been modifeid with hammer and chisel by someone to install a single din radio. I have a section from another dash that has good radio opening. I'm not sure if I want to do the surgery for the stock radio or if I want to do something different. What are you guys doing about radio? What model do you call a 1952GMC? Thanks

Re: What radio to use?

My dash is going to be all changed around with a different dash with custom instrument panel so that doesn't help but I am planning on a swing down cover to hide the radio's face panel. I'd repair the dash, use a radio delete plate and then make a panel to hold the radio to go under the dash or maybe a console to go up in the roof to hold the radio up out of sight from most eyes.

Re: What radio to use?

This a dash in a '55 chevy using a custom auto sound radio... if you fix your dash it would look like this...

Re: What radio to use?

I think by his first post he has a 52' gmc, so his Advance Design dash would obviously be different.
To answer the original question I personally would restore it to the original form, but it completely depends on what your plans with your truck are, good luck!

Thanks Maximus, didn't see the '52 line... in that case i can only show you a '51 with the stock block off plate, but we still used the custom auto sound r.adio that you can hide anywhere

Re: What radio to use?

Hey Parkwood both those are good looking dashes. Is that a custom audio sound radio in the 55 dash? Does custom audio sound also make the hidden radio? Is that what you are using in the 51 dash? Thanks. Scott

Scott, yes both are from Custom Auto Sound.. the one in the '55 we also added a CD player behind the the seat.
On the '51 we put the unit under the seat and the face of the radio in the glove box.. the '51 came with an iPod hook up.

Re: What radio to use?

put the speaker face on a hinge an build a 2 inch box an install on the back side of the dash, i did mine 2 inchs so u have a place to put keys r the remote for the radio, when you close the speaker face nobody will see the radio, if u get a radio with a remote u can work it with the speaker face closed

Re: What radio to use?

I went with XM radio in my 50. Made a backing plate out of some ABS plastic, bolted it in place where the radio knobs would go. the XM unit is held in place with double sided tape. An old Pioneer amp under the seat provides power to a pair of 6X9's behind the seat. A volume control from PAC (LC-1) keeps the tunes at the correct level. I can move the XM unit from car to car, I love it.

Re: What radio to use?

I used a JBL marine audio and put the remote in the glove box. I also have a wireless remote so that I can change songs, volume, etc. I was originally going to use a hidden audio unit but, had read several reviews where the sound isn't all that great.

Parkwood, this is off topic but that under dash unit is different than the "standard" vintage air unit, was that a custom order thing from V/A? I believe the standard has those cheap looking knobs.

Re: What radio to use?

Renegade6. That is a good idea. on the 1952 GMC dash would you smooth the original radio hole and eliminate it or use the factory delete? Thanks.

Re: What radio to use?

I think it depends what look you are going for. If you want to go custom, I would fill and smooth it otherwise use the delete plate.

Re: What radio to use?

Thanks for the input. I patched the damage with a piece from anothe ND dash. Now I need to find a suitable radio. After doing some searching I wished I would have smoothed the radio hole. I have not found a suitable radio to fit the original opening. Any ideas on what brand to use???????
