Question Push Button Ignition?

Has anyone ever wired up a push button ignition on their truck?
I really want to try this, but I suck with electrical on my truck and was wondering if its a tough job or not?
If you don't know what im talking about, I mean push button as in like on the Honda S2000's

A buddy of mine is running a push button switch for his ignition on his B&M shifter base plate on his '60 Impala. He has it wired up so that he still has to put the key in and have it turned to on but he took the wire that goes to the started and routed it to this push button switch. I think it is a sweet idea.

You will still need a key or some kind of switch to turn on the acc. Then you can just run your starter wires to your push button. Simple installation, just make sure your locks work! Then again, it only takes a sec. to hot wire our trucks anyway. Good luck!

Mine is push button start. I did not wire it the previous owner did. Its wired to a toggle switch also where the switch has to be on for it to start. He was to friggen lazy to figure out how to wire it to the ignition. It can be a pain in the butt sometimes because my door locks don't work and when I go fishin or somewhere in it I always worry someone may try to steal it. I say go for it, just don't do it half-assed with a toggle switch.

Ya ok, thats all i was hoping it was...now, does anyone know which wire I would have to route to the switch, I still want to have to use the key, but just push the button instead of turning the key to start. There are some fat wires on the back of the ignition switch, and I have no idea which one is which...Any help would be greatly appreciated

Should be easy. We did it to an old Honda Civic because the contacts were shot on the start function of the switch. The switch is part of a multiple function switch setup and costs and arm and a leg. The rest still worked so we just set it up with a pushbutton on the dash. Turn the key on, push in the button until it starts and let go of the button. Simple.

All the GM vehicles I've worked on, the wire to the starter was purple. Just pull power off from a hot source and connect the other side of the switch to the purple wire.

Make sure you use a switch rated for the amp draw. Many trucks in the late 40's early 50's had the set-up you describe from the factory. Some even used a switch like the floor mounted dimmer switch that was under the acelerator pedal. You started the truck by flooring the gas.

So to unwire it from a button back to the ignition do I just take the wire from the button that leads to the starter and splice it to the purple one? If so then I think my key start thing(Can't remember the exact name for it right now) may be bad because I tried that today.

Ok, so what is the wire from the 'On' position of the ignition? Like what wires would you use so that you have to have the key in the on position before you could hit the button?

On the harness going to the IGN switch, there is a large pink wire. Tap into this wire, it can support the load. You'll need to run power from it, and not just disconnect it all together.
Run your new wire from the pink, to your starter button, and then run the wire from the starter button to the starter. You'll see a purple wire on the starter, it should be on the S trminal. Bolt your wire here.
You will still need the key to do anything, the button won't have any juice at all untill the ign switch is in the on position.

Awesome!
So just to clarify...run pink to button, then button to purple? and that should work?
What do you mean by S terminal? Sorry to be such a bother, but I really wanna do this right.

Thanks,
Benson

Well, the pink wire has to keep going where it was going, you just need to tap into it. But the wire coming off the pink term, to the button, then button to the S terminal.
When you look at the starter, there will be up to 3 wires on it.
The main battery positive cable.
the Yellow wire on the R terminal which you wat to remove if you have HEI ignition, or not mess with if you still have points.
And the purple which is on the S terminal.

Ok, one more question...
when you say remove the yellow wire, do you mean remove it when installing this button if you have HEI?
Or do you mean, it should not be there if you have HEI at all?
I do have HEI...

it doesnt need to be there at all if you have HEI, none of my trucks have em and they are all HEI/keyed ignition... the S terminal with the purple wire, SHOULD be the one closest to the block...

No terribly useful info...but the ignition on my girlfriend's Opel is set up the same way because ignition switches for it also cost an arm and a leg. Now, it's just rotate the key to on (there's not a stop until you get pretty much 180, not even a notch) and push the button further down on the column...works well, IMO.

I think it's a cool idea. Personally, I think a really cool setup would be to have the entire ignition cylinder be the button...turn the key, and then push the whole thing into the dash...crazy, I know, heh.

When my 71 Monte was still alive I had the same problem as Project1970's Opel. The ignition switch was broke and I didn't want to buy a new one. I wired up a remote starter switch from my tool box. You just put the key in the run position and hit the button.

You shouldn't need a heavy amp button. Those are for old tractors and REO Speedwagons without cylinoids. You know what would be neat though, throw your friends off too, is to put a push button on the floor! Tell them your truck just knows when your ready to go and starts right up!

Green72GMC, have you thought about installing a battery kill switch under your dash or seat. I've even heard of people putting them in their glove boxes. Just an idea.
