Re: inner grille repair

My inner grill was damaged (broken ribs). I found that ABS cement worked OK (found in plumbing supplies at hardware store). I cleaned the joint well (with acetone) and then lightly sanded it. I used flat ABS material from a scrap electronic housing for splicing material, glued it to the repair, and clamped it overnight. I did this about a year ago and so far the repairs are holding. None of my repairs show which is good because they aren't beautiful. Butt joints on the eggcrate could be difficult. I wish I had some pics, but I don't.

Re: inner grille repair

I would think JB weld would work too.

Re: inner grille repair

I have really good luck with epoxie. Repairs going back to 2000 are still holding.

I use the epoxie like is used for body repair, (not the real hairy stuff).

Re: inner grille repair

I tried JBWeld but it didn't seem to want to grip the plastic very well and fell off easily.

Re: inner grille repair

I just picked up a stock grill for my 71. It's good but has about 7 serious cracks. I was thinking JBweld until I read bollybib's post. What about the ABS cement - isn't that the type of glue that melts plastic? I'd hate to screw up and ruin this thing. Also, what was the original color of the plastic? Gray or silver? I planned to paint it dull silver, but now I'm not so sure.

Re: inner grille repair

my first thought was jb-weld. but figured i would ask, seeing they are so many products available now days. i may stop at a few collision shops here in town and see what they recommend, since cars are 90% plastic now. thanks for the replies, and keep them coming we need more info.

Re: inner grille repair

MEK - Methyl something Keytone. It's like a heavy duty paint thinner substance. Found at most home DIY shops (Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace) Put some scrap pieces of the same type of plastic in little chunks in a old Glass jar for a night or two. This becomes a paste and brush it into a wedge shape you carve out around a crack. Works like a charm. Let it dry for a day or so, and sand. Then you can paint. Bye Bye Cracks. Works the same for missing pieces as well. Trevor
