Re: Question about puting aftermarket air on

you can weld everything up and then put a bulkhead in there, also most people are using the oldair setup or the vintage air gen III kit, choices are yours, either way, all said and done about $1000

Re: Question about puting aftermarket air on

Vintage air has the best kit I have seen for our trucks, They even have panels that are designed for our fire wall if you dont want to weld. the entire system minus the compressor and condensor fit under the dashand opens up the engine compartment dramatically.

Re: Question about puting aftermarket air on

The kit is pictured in their website. It is small enough to fit under the dash. I do not know the exact dimensions but I have sat in a cab with installed on a hot day and it is better than factory that is for sure.
I live in So Cal so heat is not the biggest issue. Seems to put out ample heat though.

With the old air kit - not big enough. I have it, and I wouldn't recommend it. Haven't seen the vintage setup in person, so can't say if it's any better or worse. If I was to do it over, I'd buy a kit with an underdash evaporator and leave the original heater alone:

Think there would be any fogging problems on rainy days?

Re: Question about puting aftermarket air on

I've heard a lot good about Vintage Air. For those of you who have it installed, how difficult is it? Any special tools needed? Is it something that I'd need to take to a shop to get done?

The standard non-AC Chevy heatbox does okay for defrost. What it lacks in dry air, it makes up for with super-jet-afterburner-blast-power! (TM, pat. pending.)

I'm really underwhelmed with the old air kit. It does blow some decent cold air, but the heat/defrost is a weak girlie man unit. Also, the vents and underdash casing are made out of cheap cheap cheap supercheap garbage plastic - and the heat blows mainly through the aircon vents, so you stay cold from the waist down. It's just a bs crap kit all around.

I hear you on the standard non-ac heat, after i got all the pine straw and leaves cleaned out it blows really good, still on rainy days it gets busy trying to keep the windows clear of fog and when you said if you hadit to do again you would just use an under the dash unit.
Which leads me to ask? do you think that with the factory non-a/c heater and defrost and using a hang down unit will keep the windows clear?

Re: Question about puting aftermarket air on

The aftermarket kit to get is the Vintage air kit and the one for your truck that will work the best will be the Gen IV sure fit kit this kit is 100% bolt in and this will keep you nice and cool in the summer day and keep you warm on the cold days. Then on those rainy days the defroster will keep your windows clear. There is execellent support on Vintage air products and we here at Scotts we sell a ton of there kits to many members here on this site ad they have been all very happy with there kits and the prices we have on them to top off that.We are still having a great sale on them and you will save some $$$ and get great customer service from us.If you all want to purchase the best Ac kit out there let us know and we will take care of you for sure!!!!!!

Re: Question about puting aftermarket air on

I have a vintage air direct fit, and it was a snap to put in. Had to ream out 1 hole. The units are for pickups ,though, and neither the heat or air do a great job in a suburban. Even when using the larger recommended compressor. Have not had any luck getting it to work either with the rear factory air. They may have an acceptable rear unit by now, though. They are good people to work with, and will try to help you.

Re: Question about puting aftermarket air on

I have a 72 and installed the Gen Air 4 made by Vintage Air, it was very easy to put in by myself. The unit puts out very cool air and very hot heat, it works very good and was a breeze to install. They even send you a new glove box because the original will not fit after the installation, it's too big.I ordered the chrome compressor and the brackets that hold the compressor and the macthing one for the alternator. The whole kit cost me $1,400.00
