Missing Hardware

I have half of the bolt section from Home Depot in the front end of my truck! Whomever had it before me either lost the can of bolts they took off, or tossed them aside because I am missing so many of them! Good thing most of them are the same size, but the problem is that every time I think I have enough bolts and washers, I find 10 more that are missing!

Why not buy a box of them from a bolt supplier? I go to the local bolt and fastener supply house and buy a box of bolts, box of nuts and washers. That's what I do, as extra's are always handy. Probably be cheaper in the long run, and you'd be amazed how many other things can use the same size bolt nut and washer in a pinch.

Well, I only recently started bolting it back together, and didn't know what size I needed. Now that I know this...I will be stocking up for sure! Also, when I was installing the core support, I had to push the fenders up about 2 inches for the holes to line up. It is a fight by yourself for sure!

Hi There azsnow! I will be boltng mine up to and have no idea what size bolts I need. Do you know what is needed for the front section? I could use the help. I looked all over the place to try and find the bolt sizes and have come up empty.

You can buy them in bulk from tractor supply. I pick up several ever so often. Friend of mine brings me stainless bolts and nuts every so often but they are all allen head.

Hey vht! I don't think it's a problem to get the bolts. The problem is what size's do I need, nut /bolt/washer. I'm not sure if anyone on this site would have the info for that.
That would be great if someone knew all the bolts to reassemble the truck. I received the truck with the front end disassembled, so I have no idea what the sizes I need to reassemble it. Any info would help a great deal or someone on the site that you know that could help.

You'd be better off at Copperstate in Phx or Fastenal. I'm sure they have one of those in the valley. Most of the bolts in the front are 5/16 coarse thread by 3/4" length. There are a few 3/8 coarse but most of the body bolts and nuts are 5/16. Sometimes 1/2" length will work and you have less thread showing. I don't use lock washers(blue loctite or nylocks) and a good trick for flat washers that fit right is to buy 8MM flats. The ones from Fastenal fit 5/16 bolts much better(less sloppy) than USS washers. That sounds a little picky but that's the way I am. Fastenal also has some killer stainless button head allen type that polish up very easily, if you're of a mind.

I thought that there would have been a brake down somewhere on all the bolts/nuts/washers/grommets/an-core nuts and anything else we needed to put these truck back together the right way. On the site, I'm sure someone must a crossed this path before. There is a guy on Ebay that is selling some bolt kits for the 57,58,59 Chevy P/U. I thought that the 55,56,57 where the same and the 58,59 where the same? But he said the 57 is different then the 56! I have the whole front to put back on after the 80's front clip goes in next week. I'm sure there will be some modes done where the upper control arms will be and have to modify the inner engine bay panels for it. I'm not sure as it is my first truck build.

Fastenall also has the 1/4" splined carriage bolts for bed strips like the originals. And they sell them in quantities smaller than 500. In the west Tacoma Screw is a good bolt supplier.

Thanks OrrieG! I guess that would be in the Good Old USA. I'm in Canada and I imagine they ship out to Canada. The problem is what bolts to buy for the front end? Speedbumpauto supplied me with some bolt numbers, so now it will just be to find out where they go in the assembly.

Hey Pat! Would it be possible to keep a list of bolt sizes and lengths? That you change out. My truck is pretty much in pieces at the guy my friend bought it from now me has to figure out what bolts to use to get it back together. Any help on any of the bolts/nuts/washer/grommets or anything else you replace would be a great start for me. If it is not to much to ask.
I then will keep a list and buy the ones I need as I go.

You might want to take a look at the Restoration Specialties catalog. You can get original style fasteners there if you are looking for those. I got the bolts to put my front end back together from there. They even have clutch head screws.

Tucker classic truck parts shows some body bolts in both mild and stainless but the descriptions of the kits is very vague online and I'd be calling and asking before doing any ordering.
I've gotten to where I buy a lot of bolts and what not from the local Fasteners store as they don't have a problem selling you the exact quantity you need and don't require you to buy a box quantity as the local Fastenal does. The Tacoma screw store is too far out of the way for me. At home I run down to my neighbor's machine shop and buy grade 5 or grade 8 from him at ag customers pricing.
I still hit the local ag supply for bulk grade 5 fasteners by the pound but lately their prices have gotten right up with the machine shops individual prices so there isn't the saving there used to be.

I'm another one who is going to have to change out a lot of bolts on his truck to get rid of miss matched and wrong length bolts.

Thanks Russell & mr48chev! I'm just so surprised that no one has a break down on all the fasteners for these trucks. That would help everyone that is tiring to get these trucks put back together the way they were meant to be. Would save a lot of time! That way you could get more done like mr48chev pointed out.
I only have the shop manual and that is it. I wonder if there is a break down on all the fasteners/bolts/nuts/washers/grommets etc for the truck in another manual/book?
have any of you guy's heard of one?

The other think I neglected to mention is the factory used a thing called a flange head bolt on almost all the sheetmetal connections, some with captive washers. They are available at the fastener places in 5/16 USS thread. I replaced those with button head fasteners that are polished where you can see them. McMaster Carr hardware has a great website where you can look at the fasteners. They also give prices and ship quickly.

I've been to our Fastenal 3 times and everytime they say, we will have to order that, and they are really high on their prices. Plus they're not open on wk ends. You can't go wrong with various 3/8, 5/16, 1/4, bolts in different lengths. Buy washers and nuts with them. I buy all grade 8's myself. You will always use those sizes if you do anything at all. Buy a bolt cabinet and stock it a little at a time. Thanks for the tip on the bed bolts at Fastenal, that's good to know. I'm in the same boat, mine came all apart so it's going to be fun.

I keep a stock of bolts and nuts
Length 3/4, 1, and 1 1/4
1/4 5/16 and 3/8 nuts in course thread
flats and locks all by the box (100)
all grade 8, that will fix most anything on these AD's
The special length and size screws and bolts will come from Ace in small quanities

Thanks solidaxel! That's good to know, I put it on my list.
I think when it comes down to the assemble time and I wasn't sure what bolts I needed. I'd just measure the holes in the panels to find out the sizes but that is trues to keep a stock of the most used bolts on these trucks.
