Front end brake/wheel fitment-15x10, disc conversion
hey folks,
I'm about to order a ton of parts this week so that I can really start on my build. It's a 69 with factory drums all around. My goal is to convert it to discs in front and drop it 4/6. I have bags for the back, so that's taken care of. In the front, I'm going with drop spindles (modular or standard?) and lowering springs. Can I simply order the drop spindles and then all the disc brake parts for that year truck from rock auto/lmc and be okay, or is it better to go with a kit? As far as wheels go with all this, my idea was to go with 15x10s all around. Is it better to go with a 15x8 up front instead? Can the CPP modular drop spindles be fitted so that I can run 15x10 wheels in the front, or is it not worth it? My wheels will be Cragar Soft 8s. I've read about the modular spindles widening the track, so I'm sure this causes fitment issues with 10 inch wheels. Can anyone enlighten me? Here's a pic of the mess I'm in ![]() ![]() |

Any help?
Need to get these parts ordered and don't want to make a several hundred dollar mistake ![]() I've searched a few threads and only ended up even more confused about how the modular spindles work :/ |

I consider a 4/6 drop the best for these era trucks. It's not just about spindles and springs. You also need to buy drop shocks, rear shock relocators, and an adjustable rear track bar. Like everyone I talk to,... I suggest you lower the truck first,... and then buy wheels. You will have a tough time getting a 15" diameter wheel up front that is 10" wide. Some people have to use a 7" rim for this drop. The wheels backspace on a 15" rim is what dictates the width. With drop spindles you can only use a 3.5"-3.75" backspace without having to trim the lower control arms. 15" wheels with 4" or more backspace will require you to trim the lower control arms because the contact the inside edge of the wheels. (larger diameter wheels lessen the amount of trimming) The "Modular" spindles sold by CPP are only a 2" drop,... but they actually NARROW the track width. This will help you run a 8" rim up front,... but the 10's are still out of the question. Plus the wheel backspacing will still be critical. Front tire height will also be limited by your inner fenders. Read about other members projects. There is plenty of info on here. I personally like using ECE (www.earlyclassic) for my suspension products on 67-72 trucks.

Re: Front end brake/wheel fitment-15x10, disc conversion
Thank you very much for the help.
I'm ordering everything from ECE, but I noticed the CPP modular spindles, so that intrigued me. I just got off the phone with Mark from ECE, you both were a big help. I'm doing bags in the back, so I'll have to figure out exactly how much drop I'll get from them. I'm going with Soft 8s in a 15x10 in back, 15x8 up front & 275 and 235 radial T/A. The guy from ECE said this wouldn't be a problem. Time to start the build thread I've been procrastinating on! Thanks for all the help. |
