Please help!!!
Ive posted threads about this before but now that its the night before i send my truck into the shop to get the exhaust redone im starting to get cold feet i cant decide whether i want to install 3 inch pipes (which i think is over kill) or do 2.5 inch. Does anyone have any suggestions? I also have long tube headers, and some other minor upgrades. I'm looking for a deep aggressive sound, any advice would helpful. Thanks.......

Re: Please help!!!
You can get deep aggressive sound with 2.5" pipe. That all comes from what mufflers you use.
I have long yube Headman Hedders and 3" pipe on mine with 40 series Flowmasters that dump out in front of the rear tires. It's LOUD! 2.5" will prolly be just fine... Gary

I came across this a while back. It might answer some of your questions.

Re: Please help!!!
My engine is built for RPM's... so the performance was already figured in to the equasion.
I knew what it was gonna do when I fabricated it. Gary

Re: Please help!!!
thanks that was some good information Indyuke. since the article was aimed more towards a four cylinders perspective what about a V-8? I guess the next bit of information i should analyze is more rpm range. i dont have it exactly pin pointed but i feel that i have most of my power at low rpms, but i also think that a lot of that has to do with the 4:11s i have. i'm possibly trying to gain a little more power in mid rpms. so maybe 3 inch is to much but maybe go with my set plan of 2.5 inch pipe?

Re: Please help!!!
2.5" will work fine. 3" would be good on a nasty rat motor.

Re: Please help!!!
I have true dual exhaust, no H or X pipes and 2.5 inch pipes. I know for my truck, the 2.5 inch pipes are too big and the exhaust velocity isn't as high as it should be to whisk the exhaust out of the system before it gets too cold. I notice on cold days (maybe 35deg or lower) when I come to stop at a light and sit idling for a minute or more, the exhaust will start coming out as white steamy clouds like all cars do when they're first started up.
I talked with an exhaust guy, and he said its because the exhaust is cooling down too much and condensing in the pipes even though the truck is at operating temps. He told me if I put smaller pipes in, that the exhaust will travel faster through the system and come out clear. It will help scavenge the system and help prevent the inside of the pipes from prematurely rusting out. But what happens with my truck may not be true for yours. I'd talk with a couple exhaust shops and get their opinions. They should know all this stuff. |

Re: Please help!!!
I have 2 1/4" pipe, and have a little drone that is driving me crazy. I am installing an H pipe next week, to see if I can eliminate it. My truck is by no means loud, just a drone @ 2200 rpms up.

Re: Please help!!!
Mcbassin, you did great work on your exhaust. I noticed that you installed magnaflows. i have flowmasters currently and thought about switching, how you like the magnaflows?

I researched for a while before I decided on these magnaflows. I didn't want any droning. They aren't super loud if that's what you're looking for. I don't have my cab installed so I can't tell you how they will sound inside. They sound awesome to me. |

Re: Please help!!!
Drone is caused by mufflers, not by exhaust size. (more specifically, sound frequencies)

Re: Please help!!!
I have headmen headers 2 1/2" exhaust with an H-pipe flowmaster 40's exiting at the bumper. It's loud, but not to loud and there is no drone. I have had alot of people say how good it sounds.
