67 Stepside added to the Collection

Just picked up this 67 last week. I have wanted a 67 small window truck for a long time. It has been off the road for 8 plus years. It was stored in a warehouse for the last 5 years, but I'm sure it has spent many years outside. This week I took out the plugs cleaned them and sprayed marvel mystery oil in the cylinders. I also had to replace the ignition switch as I had no keys. Today I changed the oil, hooked a fuel line to a gas can, sprayed some starting fluid in the carb and she fired right up. I could only keep it running on starting fluid. It appears the fuel pump is not working. I know a lot of people love to modify their trucks, but it is gratifing to get an old stock one running again. I'm just not sure if I want to sink money into the 6 cylinder or just throw one of the V8 engines that I have laying around in it.

Replace the fuel pump and run it as is! I wouldn't change a thing.

I love it!!

Well except for that huge dent in the driver door. Take that door panel off, roll the window up, and give that nasty dent a good smack. I bet most of it will pop out.

Love the color and the inline 6 is definitely cool.

Nice save.

Re: 67 Stepside added to the Collection

Id leave it too.

How many options does that thing have. Very few I would say.

V8s are overrated in the best of times. Especially when it takes a thing called work to put one in. Roll with the six.

Re: 67 Stepside added to the Collection

Here's the dilemma I'm stuck with. I like the cool simplicity of the 6 cylinder, but I'm afraid the motor is just wore out. I can turn the motor by hand just by grabbing on to the fan blades and it needs minimum of new fuel pump, carb rebuild, ign wires, belt, hoses and vc gasket. When I had it running it was blowing smoke out of the breather cap and pcv grommet. Option 2 is I have a 69 stepside that I need to replace the frame on(see pic). It has been in the back of the shop for about a year and a half. It has a nice small block and I need to pull the motor out anyways. I could pull the motor and exhaust out of the 69 and put it in the 67. It would just involve a little time, but next to no money. This would also get me motivated to do the frame swap on the 69.

Re: 67 Stepside added to the Collection

I just drilled out the locking gas cap on the 67 and it looks like I will be needing a fuel tank. It sure had a pleasant odor coming out of it.

Cool truck! Might just be the bad gas in the tank and not a fuel pump...try running it off a gas can for a bit to see if the pump is working....

And if you can't find a tank local I have a few for sale up in Richmond.

Re: 67 Stepside added to the Collection

Today I pulled off the valve cover to see how the inside of the motor looked. It is amazingly clean for 126k miles. Usually an old motor like this would be gummed up especially the way the outside looks. Tomorrow I'm going to get a new fuel pump and see if I can get it to run. Hopefully this will be a good motor, if not it's V8 time.

Re: 67 Stepside added to the Collection

Did the dent in the driver's door get into the rocker too? Not that it's a big deal to fix but I agree, most of that in the door would pop right out.

Good looking truck man. I'd focus the money on getting it dependable and save the 6 if you can. Nothing wrong with a 6cyl truck. .. those old motors are pretty strong.

Re: 67 Stepside added to the Collection

The dent got into the rocker slightly, but not too much. Even though the door is heavily dented, it opens and shuts just fine and the window rolls up and down.

Re: 67 Stepside added to the Collection

Maybe just leave the dent ?

I think it adds character. Maybe a big bull ran into it while it was in the pasture sometime in the last 43yrs(?). Man I wish these trucks could talk sometimes.

From experience I can say that these 6 bangers run solid and seemingly run forever. Check out the one I had in my 1961 Apache.

However, these 6 cylinders require more patience to work on than a V8 and I would strongly recommend having the factory service manual on hand as a reference prior to doing any work on the six.

I'd suggest you install an electronic ignition...it makes a world of difference in driveability...along with wires and plugs. I'd recommend purchasing parts through Tom Landon's Stovebolt Engine Company...he is more than willing to spend time with his customers to make sure they get what they need.

Do a carb overhaul for sure and replace the intake / exhaust gaskets while you are at it.

Although a little tedious labor wise, it would be a good idea to replace the timming gear set and install a new oil pump.

It may seem like this is quite a bit of work...but it really is not...that is...if you do it all at once.

The big plus is that once you set one of these 6 cylinders up...they are really dependable...and get decent gas mileage albeit they are not too strong on power...about 60 to 65 max on the highway but for around town driving the six has plenty of power.

Nice truck. I love the 67 GMC's. There has been one for sale here locally for about 6 months, but I have enough projects.

Autoblueprint

Thanks for the advise. I actually find the 6 cyl. easy to work on. I had my 1st chevy 250 in a 67 firebird about 23 years ago and I use to own a 67 C30 Tow Truck about 18 years ago. It had a 250 with the sm420 4 speed and 5.13 rear gears. It would tow just about anything, but it had no top end speed.

Re: 67 Stepside added to the Collection

I installed a new fuel pump today and that took care of the fuel delivery problem, only to create a new problem. The carb is leaking fuel. It looks like someone beat on it with a hammer and cracked the housing. What really sucks is I had a 66 I was parting out this summer that had the 250 in it. I wish I still had it now. Well I guess the carb search begins.
