exchaning 12 bolt carrier.
I need to know if I can and how to exchange carriers from one 12 bolt 3.73 for another 12 3.73. The present one is noisy. The replacement has a worn posi (want to rebuild but another question) Am I correct that I need to pull the axle then ?? remove pinion nut and flange and then carrier bearing caps and pull out carrier assembly. Will I need to be concerned about crush sleeve and or gear meshing. Any help the book has completely confused me. Ed ke6bnl So.Calif.

Are you changing gears or just the carriers?
If just the carriers, then you will not have to do anything with the pinion. Jim |

I'm not a gear expert, but if he is fighting a noise problem, it seems to me that it would be best to change the pinion and ring gear as a set. Regardless, I would think it would be best to keep gears that have been run together as a set for 30+ together as a set. If so, you would want to buy a carrier bearing kit for the rearend, which would give you the crush sleeve as part of the kit. Another possibly easier avenue may be to replace the complete rear axle assembly, that way you don't have to worry about setting it up or paying someone to set it up. If they are not done correctly, you will have problems with noise and short gear life.
