Re: need help building panel for behind the seat
i would laminate 3 or more pieces of poster paper for a pattern.. you can apply spun fiber glass over that.. cut the apply the bow tie and add it after the fact.. apply several layers of glass,, and a lot of sand paper.. if you are just learning to work with glass, anyone that works with boat repair can help with the learning curve.. i work in wood but those tight curves if wood are reserved for the very experienced wood worker.. very thin and steam.. cut the holes after the fact, drill mounting holes.. you can reinforce mounting points by sandwiching washers as you are doing the glass
you can use thin wood for the flat areas for strength during the build as well.. the core has to be strong enough to stand on it's own,, you can not do a clean job over a flimsy core that will not hold itself together.. nothing is wrong with duct tape under glass.. |

Re: need help building panel for behind the seat
Depends on how much fiberglass you want to use. You could build the whole thing out of wood and body filler, or build a wood frame with fiberglass, or a mix of wood and glass.
My rear section looks a little like that but with more shape and is 75% fiberglass with only a few parts of wood for mounting surfaces and bracing. I am using cotton tshirt material for my base, then at least 7 layers of fiberglass mat. Mine is somewhat structural, though.

Re: need help building panel for behind the seat
I have done lots glass work. The fairing on my harley is all custom.Started with card board, tape and hot glue. Got it close, pulled apart transferred to metal reassembled. Did some bondo work.made it into whats called a plug coated it with primer few times waxed it,spryaed with mold release.fiberglassed over it alternating form cloth to mat and resin.Once fairly strong I re inforced with wood glassed into out side.Worke it apart and I had a mold. Sanded it down sealed real good srpayed 3 coats mold realease. laid fiberglass in side.layer cloth, two layers matting and cloth.Let set 12 hours worked it apart.I have totaly differant fairing, pretty badass IMO(all that counts in custom).I have maybe 100.00 total. lots work but cool/Best part when someone ask Hey whos fairing I say mine, then no who made it.I say what I said I did. maybe shallow but having them go damn that cool or bas as hell is ten times more fun when I mkae it then oif bought it.

What about forming pvc plastic to mak the corners and flat panel? Cover with foam and form the design from thicker foam. Than cover.

Re: need help building panel for behind the seat
if you are not doing audio.. porterbuild makes a steel back panel..
he does think it's gold tho.. wonder if you could make the backer out of the panel they use for wall covering in stores.. it's like paneling only thin plastic.. easy to bend.. get your cut/shape. add a little steel strap to it's back to hold the shape and then sand and fiberglass over it.. kinda shocked that no ones made a mold, and popped out a ton as it seem. like a easy sell |

And I thought that $249 was a steal for all the work that went into it!

Re: need help building panel for behind the seat
I'd say $250 for fitted rolled steel is a deal compared to alternatives.

Re: need help building panel for behind the seat
build your own out of fiberglass. this is in my 58 but it would work for any truck.
just leave out all the battery relocation and stereo stuff. check out my interior build link in my signature if you need more info.
