what does this part do?

the ac air vent

I'm working on putting my interior and adding some speakers. I'm trying to figure out what to do with my kick panels.

What does the air vent up under my dash on the passengers side do?

I have factory AC.

I don't think my old vent door was hooked up to anything. I was having trouble with engine smell in my cab when running the AC (if that is at all connected)

looking in the hole with the trim/kick panel removed, is that a filter back there? some kind of fan?

sorry if this is a retarded question but I got no idea what that hole does and what happens if I cover it up??

thanks

Re: what does this part do?

not sure in your 80 but my 73 just opens a vent to fresh air.. seal the penetrations in your firewall, might help. to answer your question.. pi$$ on the ricers.. until you add one of those to your stable..

That big door incorporated in your right side kick panel is for fresh air. It is vacuum operated to open when you slide your a/c controls to "vent".

It is designed to be open all the time except when your A/C selector is moved to recirculate, then it closes to use only cab air for cooling or heating.

re smell in cab
make sure the cowel seal is in place and tight
mine is out right now and it stinks in the cab
trucks with no AC have vents on both sides
with AC only the pass side

thanks buddy, I didn't have a cowel seal when I first got it. I put one in after a few days and it did cut back the smell, but still pretty bad.

I found a few small holes in the cab when the interior was pulled out. I'm going to sound mat the cab here in a few days so I'm hopping that will help.

I'm thinking some aluminum tape over the small holes then the sound mat sound should stop any air from getting in through them and the tape should stop any goop from oozing out when the mat heats up...

Re: what does this part do?

Anyone ever have a leak from this kick panel area from rain? I have a very small slow drip from there. I have not pulled it off yet. However, it has dripped enought over the years for the pad to soak it up and rust out the floorpan in that area.

I've seen a lot of trucks rusted in that area, so I'd assume that's a kinda normal problem. Mine is all stripped down and had no rust, so don't think I had water getting in there. But the new parts I got in make a MUCH better seal than the 30+ year old ones that were there.

Around the foot vent area?
There is a white thin foam tape kinda stuff dries out around it
A few screws/bolts hold it in place
