Clutch question
So, an hour after my neighbor borrowed my 3/4 ton, he calls and asks if it has been having "Problems". Roasted the clutch. This will be the fourth time I have changed it out in 12 years. My local parts guys offer a new one, $120 bucks, or one that is more heavy duty, for $190. Is there really a difference, and if so, is it worth it? She hauls heavy loads for me all the time, but not for the neighbor anymore. Thanks

HD kit is likely a pressure plate w/heavier base pressure and/or different friction material on the disc. Might be worth the upgrade if you're burning through them faster than you should be with the work the truck does.

Not that many at all. Less than 10,000, but all of them are hard. Heavy loads pulling heavy trailers.

I would go HD for sure with your work loads. Hayes makes some pretty strong ones available at JEGS

I think the one you have is the 11 inch right? You can do a heavier clamp load with an upgraded pressure plate and organic clutch, replace the bushing for a pilot bearing and a throw out bearing. I don't know how to do mine, I want a 12" flywheel with a heavy pressure plate and an organic one for heavy hauling. The only issue I have is adjusting the starter.

I would make sure the neighbor knows how to drive a stick... my 77 still has the original clutch in it and it has 214000 miles on it me personally I would go with the heavy duty clutch so here is a question for you do you have your flywheel surfaced when you install a new clutch. if not you might want to have that done to

Resurface the flywheel and use a 3200 lb Ram plate.

The HD will be a brass woven organic disc and it will have the same pressure plate load as OEM. The Brass/Organic mix is great for towing when someone that knows how to drive a stick and towing. Like others said, resurface the flywheel, replace the pilot bushing, and look into your clutch release setup.

Great insights. I resurfaced the fly 2 clutches ago, but not on the last one. I will do that, and upgrade to the hd.
