Induction upgrade What do you think

Just finished istalling a TPI injection on my 64 283. Yup kept the original engine (tired of carb ) and put the 1986 Tuned Port Injection unit in place of the carb. Really brough that 283 to life!!

What do you think?????????

That is a really sweet set-up! You are man after my own heart. I too like to make only bolt-on changes with as much original equipment as possible, that way in the future if I or someone else wanted a factory correct restoration, there will have been no modifications.

i would also like to know what all you had to swap to make it work and what sort of mileage you are getting.

No need to change the heads. The 283 heads have small combustion chambers and any later model head could end up with big compression loss.
The new intake bolts right on.
No mileage numbers yet...will advise when I get some real data

Its actually a pretty simple swap. The key is haveing all the TPI sensors and wiring. I used a set up off a 1986 Camaro, went through the wiring and deleted wiring that was not needed. There is lots of info out there on TPi swapping and wiring so that was no big deal. I had a guy in Ca burn me a new chip ( 70.00 bucks) to delet the VATS and some other functions. You will need a high pressure fuel pump and I used an external Bosch unit, run some new lines with a return. Like I said there tons of info out there. Be glad to answer any speciific questions though.

That looks great. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this done on a 283 before. Personally I’m too old school to have the enthusiasm to tackle a swap like this on my own truck, but you sure can’t beat electronic injection for efficiency and reliability. And that tubular intake certainly provides a performance image. Nice job!

So as long as you use an intake before 87 this will work correct . Cause I thought the heads on 87 up have different intake bolts either straight or angled if I remember correct. When you get some mileage numbers let me know cause I'm definelty interested to see how much it will help

You can use the later intake but you would have to open up the four center bolt holes to make it work. I have actually done that in the past and it works fine.

I will post mileage numbers when I get some miles on it.

Lucifer I think that is awesome.....I myself love the 283 (For Life)...I had one on my 62 and now on my 60....here is sum pics old skool 283 block with a early 90s twist.

I love the factory look that you're set up has. Even though the 396 in mine isn't original, I often thought about swapping the FI parts from the '97 454 that I have onto it, but I think it's more involved than just swapping the intake. Your project is motivation for me to get on with my swap though. Great work there! BTW How are the morning cold starts? Pretty much turn key?

Cold starts are a non issue EFI and Florida LOL

Love it. I have a L98 Tuned Port I just finished going though and ready to put in. I'm sure I'll have some questions. I think I have everything that I need as I have read everything that I can find in books and on the web about TPI.

What have you used for a throttle cable and pedal. I had planned on using new style chevy truck pedal and cable but was unsure about the length.

I used the late model truck pedal and bought an aftermarket cable from Mr Gasket # 5657, it has all the right stuff.

How did you end up running your return line? Are you using your original tank? I cheated and ran my return line into the supply line before the pump and filter. My issue now is after driving about 6-8 miles or idle for 10-15 minutes I start loosing fuel pressure. The strange thing is that if I put my foot to the floor it spits for a bit and then the pressure comes back and it goes like crazy but goes back down. When it is cold it runs perfect. I have started running my return line back to the tank hoping that this takes care of the issue.

How you have your return line is causing your problem. You are introducing warm, aireated fuel back directly into the fuel feed. Your return line needs to run back into the tank, as far away as possible from the pickup tube. This gives the fuel time to cool back down, and for any air in the fuel to disapate.
