16 gallon tank on a long box truck
Hey fellas, Here's what puzzling me lately. Lmc shipped me a gas tank last year by accident and said it would cost them to much to ship back and asked if I would keep it for free I said sure lol. Anyways its a smaller tank than the one that was on my truck i think my truck had a 20 gallon this one is 16 and a whole lot shorter. I got it hooked up and it fits and looks great, I'm just wondering where i would get a new filler hose as mines about a foot too short now. Did long box trucks have 16 gallon tanks ever?
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! |

Re: 16 gallon tank on a long box truck
Just called partsource they cant get it. Does anyone know which part it would be in the lmc catalogue? It doesn't show a different part number for long and short box trucks. or 16 gallon tanks.

Re: 16 gallon tank on a long box truck
Napa sells a generic fuel filler hose. Measure both your tank and filler neck size first. They have straight lengths, and a few sizes with a 45º or 90º bend in it.
I'd get some pipe (exhaust tubing or copper drain pipe) the correct diameter and just cut the existing hose to extend it. Alex. |

Re: 16 gallon tank on a long box truck
Don't order the fuel hoses from LMC. I love LMC and buy a lot from them but the hoses they sent me were about 6" to short. Checked the part numbers and everything.
I ended up going to O'Riellys and had to order a 15" 90 degree hose. I just did this yesterday and haven't installed it but I just have to cut and install.

Re: 16 gallon tank on a long box truck
I put a 16 in place of a 20 and just cut the hose and clamped a pipe in there to make up the difference. Sorry cant remember the size it was some big truck rad piping i cut up. Also i've had long boxes with both 16 and 20s, got one of each i'm currently driving.

Re: 16 gallon tank on a long box truck
It also depeneds on the year of the tank. Different tanks had different size necks therefore need smaller or larger hoses. The newer tanks (82-87 I believe) have a 1 3/8" size filler neck while the older ones had a smaller size. Measure before you buy! lol

Re: 16 gallon tank on a long box truck
Maybe you could order the wrong one from LMC and they'll accidentally ship you the correct one and you can keep it for free. Worth a shot, maybe?

Re: 16 gallon tank on a long box truck
Haha jay it's probably pretty likely it would happen!
Ok new question I found a hose that will work but now my bed rails are in the way is it possible that I have mounted the 16 gallon tank in the wrong spot? Can you guys see your sending unit between your box and cab with a 16 gallon tank? How close is the tank to the leaf spring hangars? Posted via Mobile Device |

That filler neck website posted above would have been really helpful for me when I was getting parts. The 82-87 filler neck (part that bolts to the bed) is different from the 79-81 fuel neck which is also different from the one that came off your 78. Just look on that website posted above and compare the filler necks to the one you have. Then you can determine what filler hose you need. If I misread your post and you don't have a filler neck yet, then you should get those from LMC. I ordered an 84 filler neck and it hooked up to my 84 bedside just fine. The only bad thing was the filler/vent hoses because they were all wrong. note: if you get an 82-87 filler neck that works with your box it has a ground wire that needs to be grounded to one of the bed bots on the backside of your bedside. I didn't know this at first and was confused.

Re: 16 gallon tank on a long box truck
Hey thanks for the replys! Dunno where you got the 84 and 78 years from? Its an 86 with the stock box (I should have specified) I'm pretty sure I have it mounted in the wrong spot now as the hoses don't line up now and when I mounted it I just used the normal back mount and just put 2 bolts in the front(cause they were the only ones that lines up out of the 4. now I'm thinking there are probably holes already drilled for this option and I used the wrong ones which means another afternoon under the truck lol. Does anyone have a picture of their long box truck with a 1 gallon tank on it?
Thanks for the replies "the 10" Sorry bout the year confusion I should have specified. |

Re: 16 gallon tank on a long box truck
Figured it out. I had it mounted in the wrong place. I had the tank too far back. I moved it and that solved the bed rail clearance issue. But now I've still got to track down a hose that will work!

What I did for a temp fix, was to cut the hoses in half and use pvc pipe. That will work for awhile as the gas dosen't have to sit in them.
