Re: Need wiring diagram!

You should have a big cable that runs from the starter to the battery on the larger terminal of the starter, there should also be a another wire that is on the same terminal as the battery cable that is red that runs back into the cab and connects to your fuse box.

On the second terminal of the starter (the one closest to the motor), there should be a purple wire that runs back to the ignition (where you insert your key).

However, you said the motor turns over but won't start? This doesn't sound like a starter problem because your motor wouldn't even turn over if the starter wasn't wired correctly. I'd start by testing your distributor and coil and seeing if you are getting power to it.

how many wires should be on the starter to the firewall plug. i have like 2 big ones off the big plug on the starter. and the wire on the (s) closted to the block is running from the starter into the big wire. how many wires should go from the starter to the firewall. i am so confused. my truck is my daily driver i really need it haha. please explain to this dummy!

Re: Need wiring diagram!

There should be two wires that go from the starter to the firewall, one big (and red I believe), and the other is thin and purple.

Of course this assumes someone previously hasn't rewired the truck with different color wires.

The third wire connects to the same spot as the other big (red?) wire on the starter, but it runs to the battery.

It sounds like the wires connected to your starter are correct.

If your truck is turning over but not firing then your starter is fine, you have another problem. It could be your timing, problem with the distributor, problem with fuel getting to your carburetor, or a bad carburetor. Unfortunately you'll have to do some testing to figure that part out.

Re: Need wiring diagram!

Ok so i have 3 wires on the starter. 1 big one to the battery and 2 small ones. s and r are going to the firewall plug and then i have a green and a white with coating around it. i have the green one snipped because its just a temp gauge ( i think? ) and then the coated white one pluged in the hei distrib. ok so those are all right. im getting fuel. but a while back my truck would run then it would get running really bad then die. like a spark plug is dirty or a wire came off. but then i had my dad check the distributor then we got it running but it was bad! then we turned the distrib and then it ran good. then it would not start the next day now im still sitting here frustrated on what to do..... what can i do to get it started to check the time?
thanks

Re: Need wiring diagram!

It doesn't sound like you have a wiring problem to me if you were able to get it running, even if it was running bad.

Maybe your distributor is bad - check the cap and rotor, as well as the coil in the HEI. There is also the Electronic module in the HEI's which go bad. I personally never had one quit on me, so I don't know what the symptoms would be, though if it's dead I'd imagine you won't get any spark to your plugs.

Pull your plugs and inspect them, they should be a light dirty brown color at the tip.

Does it sound like the truck wants to start but just won't? Or does it sound like it's not even close to starting?
