Fuel Pump
Where is the best location to install a after market fuel pump? I just installed my second one within four months. What I'm I doing wrong?

Close to the tank, about mid-level so the pump doesn't have to lift fuel a long ways. Is it injected or carburated? Good luck, Ron

79K30dually - a little side note - I have a 1974 c-10 with a 1988 350 that as a carb. On the 1988 350's I believe the fule pump was in the tank, but with my tank being the 1974 model I have to go with a after market pump. As it stands right now I have the pump under the hood on the frame.

what about a rear tank like an 86 and use the corresponding fuel pump

Different pumps want different locations Some pumps are puller pumps some are pusher pumps...When I bought my 77 Blazer it had a Mr Gasket pump under the hood on the frame rail, it was supposed to be a pusherpump but they installed in upfront. There was too much heat there and it would vaporlock and quit running. I could either install it in the rear close to the tank or go back to mechanical. I went mech

also may i suggest an external fuel pump that is timed to get you a shot oof fuel then shut off and let a mech pump handle running

The pump that was on there before a eletic pump under the driver side of the cab, but when it went out I moved that pump (that is the one that just went out) right next to the tank. Well I thought now I would relocate it under the hood.
The only pump that will work on this truck is a eletrical one b/c on the 1988 350 it doesnt have a slot for the rod (in the block) to push the mech pump or I would put a mech pump on it and be done with it. |

In my opinion, You had it in the correct place. What was the pressure rating of the pump? Did you have a return line? How was it wired, through the oil pressure switch? How close to the exhaust?

No I didn't have a return line, it was wired to a 20amp fuse and then to the streeing colum.

I went through 3 frame mounted pumps that were installed correctly in 6 months time, Their just not worth crap on a DD.....
Install a later model TBI tank with the pump inside, They run 9 to 12 psi, Add a return style pressure regulator with gauge near the carb adjusted to 6-7 psi then run a return line back to the tank. Wire the pump through a 30 amp relay to switched power. I haven't had a pump issue in 3 years since doing the above.

If you are going through pumps that fast, quit buying cheap junk...spend money for a good pump, wire it correctly through a 30 amp relay and you will never look back!

Then wire it properly so it isn't straining the pump...I have wired many of the Holley Blue pumps as a priming pump to fill surge tanks and only had one ever get noisy and stop working, so I doubt the pump itself is the issue, you should try wiring it via a relay though.
