51 cab mounting questions - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey guys, I am looking for a little advice on mounting my new cab. The cab I purchased already had new custom built floorpans installed. They are not stock style so the do not have any of the factory mounting locations.

So basically I will have to engineer my own mounting locations. I know from the factory the rear of the cab has shackles but I do not care to go that direction. So would like to hear what some of you that do not have stock style mounting points have done. Thanks for the help.

You could build a bracket that mounted to the frame in the same location that the shackle mounts did and use a rubber biscuit like a 55/57 Chevy motor mount biscuit for the pad. Those biscuits are easy to find and don't cost much. You could use the right size washers to shim it to the exact height you want.

I might just do that on mine rather then use the shackles when I extend the cab as it may work out better.

THe shackles allow for any frame twist not to be transmited into the cab.

True, but after a guy has an independent front end and the frame is partially or fully boxed that twist is minimal anyhow.

Agree......Depends on the frame/suspension setup.

I'd run the shackles if the chassis was all or near stock suspension wise. All you need to do is jack any corner up with a floor jack under the side of the axle to see everything flex on a truck with stock running gear under it.

The frame will be mostly boxed in. I have boxed the front with Mustang II/airride. I just picked up a new rear end to start bagging the rear. I will box most of the rear to accommodate the links for the suspension.

That frame will be plenty stiff to do what you have planned for the cab mounts. make sure that the floor is reinforced across that area though or you might have trouble with the cab settling on the mounts after a while due to the weight.
