292 Motor Mount Tower

I am starting to gather parts for my 350 to 292 swap on my '72 K20. Do I need a new cross member and motor mount towers or can I use the drivers side one in it's current location and move the passenger one back and make a support to the bottom of it?

To get the most information in a short amount of time I'm going to suggest using the Google search box at the top of the page. If you type in the words 292 mounts in the box, click on the circle in front of 67-72chevytrucks,com, and click on the "Google" button you will find quite a few threads about the subject. I like my inline and I put an S-10 five speed tranny behind it. It makes it a lot more fun to drive.

You may have some problems I'm not aware of since it's a 4x4 but I can't believe it would be anything major.

Re: 292 Motor Mount Tower

I have done some previous research on the subject. The 292 had a different cross member. From what I understand, the left hand motor mount is the same mount in the same location as the 350. I have also gathered that the right hand mount is the same mount just farther back. Is this correct? If it is, I should just be able to move the right hand tower back, drill two new holes in the frame, and make something to support the bottom of the tower.

Does anybody think this will work?

If you read some of the threads in the Google search I think you will find they are different... There are even pictures of the differences.

Re: 292 Motor Mount Tower

I also have a 292 currently in my truck. The passenger side mount is the same as a small block v8 mount and the drivers side mount is the same as a 250 mount. So your current 350 mount on the passenger side will stay in the exact same place while you will need to buy one drivers side 250 mount and bolt into the rearmost set of holes that should already be in your crossmember and frame.

Are the motor mounts themselves (rubber and steel part) the same as a 350? I am trying to see how cheap I can get this done so I would prefer to modify what I have if it will work.

I remember seeing a thread with pictures comparing different towers. I can't seem to find it.

I should of been more clear. I was referring to the towers. The rubber mounts are another story. The drivers side 292 rubber mount is the same as the 350 and the 250 but the passenger side rubber mount is 292 specific.

Here is one thread....

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=357008

I typed - 292 engine brackets - into the search box above. You have to try different wording in your search.

Here is another thread where I posted pictures of the difference:

Re: 292 Motor Mount Tower

when installing a 292 in place of a 250, you should use 73 - 87 rubber mounts for a 292. improved design much stronger, I know riped two sets before i switched.

This is something that I did not know. So You are saying that the 73-87 motor mounts will bolt right up to the older style towers? I thought that the newer motor mounts needed different towers.

Re: 292 Motor Mount Tower

The four-wheel drive towers are completly different. I know this because I didn't know this when I bought some. I'll go see if I have pictures of them on my computer, but if not I can take some when I get home Friday.

Re: 292 Motor Mount Tower

OK, I found one. It's not the best picture, but you see that they ouldn't be more different:

They are about 4" wide, and you can see that they bolt to the bottom of the top rail of the frame, and the 4X4 X-member is way different that the 2WD. I hope this helps.

BTW, that's the 292 that I'm building for my Panel right now. It looks a little better now.

Re: 292 Motor Mount Tower

That cross member is completely different than my 350 cross member. Looks like it would be easiest to find the whole cross member.

Re: 292 Motor Mount Tower

You know, I was going to visit that junkyard soon to see if he has any wheels I could use. I could check and see if it's (the X-member) is still there. It probably wouldn't take much to get it out now that the motor is out. Lemme know if your interested.

I have some pics of the K-series crossmenber for 292 plus mounts and towers. let's see if I can pull it up.

OK. No mount pads, of course.
Note the 292-only, K/Series only X-Member attaches on an angle Forward on the Pass Side frame rail to a point Aft on the Drivers Side frame rail.
Hope this helps.

I believe the towers [I used to call them "Knees"] on the C/Series (2WD) and K/Series (4WD) are the same.
[ I entered this w/o reading all the replies to the thread. I'll have to see how different the C-knees are from the K- knees.]
Only the 4X4 requires the 292-only X-member. Must've been a PIA to most dealers, who usually tried to steer the buyer into a 350 SBC w/autotrans. It was easier for them.

Re: 292 Motor Mount Tower

I will be installing new motor mounts in my 68 GMC this weekend again ! Do not install 250 motor mounts if you are upgrading to a 292 ! They will rip apart between the steel backing and rubber pad. Also a lot of them today are made in China of cheep S@#*T rubber, the 292 has monster torque and needs quality mounts. NAPA part # 602-1108 is a 292 mount with additional steel bonded to the top of the rubber pad to add strength to the mount, on a 250 mount the center bolt is only held by rubber not supported by a steel backing plate on top of the mount ! it is a pain to replace the mount while the engine is installed, so save some time and effort and look and the mount that you are going to use to ensure it has the steel bonded to the top of the rubber pad...PS: I hope you enjoy the thrill of your 292 inliner! it is a great motor and I always get a lot of thumbs up when I open my hood, The 292 has tons of potential with cast iron exhaust headers available from Tom langdon that allow for dual exhaust and a great sound not heard since the 50's & 60's whe a lot of theese motors where hopped up in street rods. I know the small block GM engine is great but I feel the inline GM 6 cyl is also a engine more people shoul consider on there next build, just my opinion...thanks for listening...
