Exhaust Pipe Sealant???
So, is there a sealant that can be used on flanged exhaust pipe connections? If so how well does it work and how easy is it to remove in the future?
The Situation: I have a 2-bolt flanged connection that I noticed was leaking (and noisy). The gasket is the grey "asbestos" type with a wire braided reinforced core. I bought the gasket, new bolts and put it all back together. It still leaks slightly, so it likely won't take long to burn up the gasket. It seems as if the flanges are possibly slightly warped. The connection is tight at the bolts, but appears to be slightly open at the "fat" part (around the pipe). This is where the leak is. So, back to the sealant question. Is this an option, or should I try to go with a double gasket to try and fill the space? I was thinking of using sealant together with the gasket. What do y'all think? |

I don't know of any sealant for flanges. Most of the exhaust shops that I've talked to say that if they have consistent problems with leaky flanges that they just weld them. Don't know if you really want to do that, but it's an option.

Thanks for the info Guys.
I just spoke to a local auto parts place and they said they have some stuff that is used for this application. Might have to give it a try - I was just concerned about having a messy job if I ever have to replace the gasket in the future. Bigred As far as welding the flanges goes, I've thought of that. Certainly would solve the problem (for now). Two problems with this though - I'd have to drop the pipe to get a good all around weld (big job) and it would be impossible to separate this joint in the future. So that's it. Thanks again and keep the suggestions/experiences coming. |
