4"-5" Grinder Wheel

How long does a metal cutting blade last for a 4"-5" grinder? I'm thinking about cutting lots of 3/8" and 1/4" plate steel. How long would a regular HD or Lowes wheel last doing that?

I use then cutting .250 wall 2x3 tube, which is 1/4 inch if you didn't know. They last a decent amount of time. You just have to take your time. Grab 10 disks and when you start getting low get some more.

Two factors to consider, brand of zip disc and the user. I find the best are Walter brand and as for the user, let the disc do the work, don`t force it

Not as long as you'd like. Don't force it, if you can only use the edge. Life of the wheel drops off fast if you go full depth on the wheel.

I have used wheels to cut up to 3/8", but if your doing lots of cutting I'd look into other means. If I'm only doing a quick cut, I'll use the grinder. More than 1 or 2, I'd drag out the torch, but that's just me.

I think donut is on the right path. if you have a lot to cut the torch would be the most cost effective. plasma would be better but a lot more loot.

if you have to use a grinder try to find a wheel that is made for cutting stainless. they will last 2-3 times as long as a wheel for mild steel.

I've had great luck with the Harbor Freight flap wheels & cut off wheels. They are way cheaper too..

if you aren't cutting in tight places and cant afford a plasma cutter, a band saw or portable band saw works great.
