Re: One truck that never made it ...
I seem to remember seeing that photo before and I believe it was a "victim" of the St. Helens eruption. It's a pretty eerie picture, especially with what looks like footprints in the ash going around the truck. Looks like the truck got very hot, maybe hot enough to blow out the glass? It would have made for an interesting exihibit for a museum. Now the only question(s) is what year is it? 3/4 ton? 4wd maybe?

^^ Yup, I have also seen that.... good chance it's a 4x4, and it appears to have a winch.

If you look, the two lines on the right are from the helicopter skids where
they most likely touched down to look for survivors... Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: One truck that never made it ...
This shows us how the force of nature can be unleashed ...
The truck is a monument to the devastation that was unleashed ... The picture is neat from an artistic perspective but not so much on the event.

Re: One truck that never made it ...
It's a worthwhile trip. We were there 10 years after the 1980 eruption. There was a lot of regrowth & recovery, but the devastation was still very much evident and awe-inspiring.

Re: One truck that never made it ...
I have never seen the second two pics, thanks for sharing. It would have been terrible to be trapped in that truck with nowhere to go, and knowing it would end up being your coffin. Very sad. Joseph

Re: One truck that never made it ...
That is a very sobering reminder of just how "small" we really are! Having been born and raised less than 100 miles from the mountain- this is something that just cannot be fully appreciated till you see it in person.
Haunting photo nonetheless.....there's a morbid beauty about it.

Re: One truck that never made it ...
Man, that would be a horrible way to go. I think the first picture was interesting, but I couldn't call it awesome. Just a reminder of how fortunate some of us are. Those last 2 photos are pretty crazy too. Does anyone know if they ever cleaned any of that up or does vegetation grow on top of the ash over time?

Re: One truck that never made it ...
The ash up there is several feet thick...over time erosion and sedimentation washes away and compacts the ash. Eventually grasses and ferns take root and start the composting process that allow larger plants to grow. It's been designated a National Monument- so there is no work being done to alter anything. It's being treated as a natural "laboratory" where university and scientific organizations can study and observe how the earth repairs itself after a magnificent disaster.

Re: One truck that never made it ...
Awesome is a statement about any event that causes awe. In this case the awesome power of the devistatoin and the vivid memories I had as a 6 year old at the time of the event remind me of the overcast skies and how it was the only on tv. As a young child I didn't understand why everyone acted the way they did, now I do.
