tranny for my 86 c 10 2wd
i am stuck between a rock and a hard place with what i want/need to do with my tranny. in my truck at the moment its a TH350S ( "S" i guess had a bunch of extra crap that is not acctually hooked up on my truck such as lockup converter) i am dropping a 1968 327 into the truck with a mid idle cam and someday I want to go to a bigger cam so i will need a stall coverter for an auto. im stuck between a 700R4 or some kind of 5 speed that would work good, i really know nothing about standard tranny's at them moment. a 5 speed is what i have wanted in it but i dont what it takes to get one into the truck and if it is really worth it. from anyone that has done a 5 speed swap what will i need to know ?

Re: tranny for my 86 c 10 2wd
I had a 350 in mine and swapped it for a 700r4 w/OD (lockup). Easy swap. I have a short bed so I didn't have to mess with the drive shaft. Have a Holley carb so I had to buy the kickdown bracket for it. No problems other than a rebuild last year.

okay awesome ! that's what I like to hear! do you have to change anything on regards to the shifter , as the 700r4 has the OD ? and another bit of a noob question probably but do you shift up into OD after you are in 3rd. gear or do you shift into it right off the get go , just wondering because D and OD are both on the column

As far as the shifter lever goes, mine doesn't have the circleD for OD. The needle just sits a little to the right of the D. It's just cosmetic. Just never thought about changing it. When you hook it up, it'll sit where it needs to, but not too far off.
I don't shift into OD. Just put her in drive and go. I bought the lockup kit from www.bowtieoverdrives.com It's a fused connection and deactivates when you press the break to keep from stalling out. Some folks who pull trailers have a toggle to turn it off so not to burn anything up. I don't pull trailers, so I don't have the toggle. Hookup was easy.
