Intake manifold question
My original 1972 intake is going in the hot tank at the machine shop, I'm thinking I should take the sheetmetal cover off the inside but its riveted on. I assume this is needed to clean out in there. Does anyone have ideas on how to replace the rivets when reassembling? Drill and tap instead? Thanks all,

You defininatly need to takethat cover off ,youd be suprised at the crud packed in under there. Take a cape chisel and tapout the rivits they come out pretty easy and then when ready to reinstall you have a choice there to rivet it back in or self tapping screws, later being the best option imo.

use loctite on the screws - would not want them falling into the lifter valley!

Thanks guys, rivets came right out, I assumed they weren't going anywhere and I'd have to grind. Glad I didn't! There was crud in there- looks like some micro kids were in there playing with those snake fireworks and left the evidence behind....

Yep. A lot of oil from the valley area splashes up under that plate & burns. Good that you took it off. I have seen a lot of engines and rebuilds ruined by particulates coming from under there.
