pros and cons 5 lug and 6

I have drop spindles for my 60. I plan on going to disks as required, but I'm not sure and can't decide if I should stick to off the shelf consumeable parts and swap to 5 lug, or order the rotors and swap to 6 lug. Which is more affordable? Wheels aren't really an issue, ill run either 6 lug 15 inch steelies, with wide whites, or dodge steel 20s and fill the holes. I know 5 lug rotors are typically cheaper than ordering 6 lug, but what about the cost of swapping the rear end to 5 lug? I know this has been covered in tons of pages of posts, I just wanted to know your view on my problem. It's late and not much is moving on the forum tonight, help a brother out...

Re: pros and cons 5 lug and 6

I'll tell ya my logic!

I am going to buy the 6 lug rotor's when I buy mine-I rebuilt my rear end and brakes so the 6 lug rear is like new.

If I stay with 6 lug fronts I only need 1 spare. The disc brake wheel will fit on the rear 6 lugger.Just my OP I could be wrong

Yeah, the stock 6 lug steelies don't clear the calipers. So you need to get wheels from a truck that had disc brakes. Personally, I am gonna stick with 6 lug when I do the disc brake swap.

Re: pros and cons 5 lug and 6

I got my stock 6 lug steelies are from a 74 blazer 4x4, will clear the disk brakes and retain original trim rings and hubcaps. With the caps on, you can hardly tell they aren't the stock three bump wheels. The holes around the rim are a little different, but who cares? I believe 71-78 4x4 trucks, blazers and jimmys and some g20 vans will provide the rims.

yeah i remember seeing a thread on here about that. pics would be great. I have 2 of those 15x8 military blazer wheels that take a stock hubcap, but can't seem to track down a couple more.

Re: pros and cons 5 lug and 6

I plan on sticking with the six lug front. I'm running the rally wheels. So my stock steelies on my 68 will not work with disc brakes??

Re: pros and cons 5 lug and 6

If you don't care about running 5 spoke mags, I'd suggest it's cheaper and easier to stick with 6 lug rotors. Yes the rotors are more expensive, but how often do they ever need to be replaced. Having the rear axles redrilled, the center hubs machined down, and new drums are going to cost a lot more. As noted above, if you run 6 lug disc brake wheels with stock hubcaps - only a real enthusiast will be able to detect they aren't original.

I'll get some pics tonight for you. Have 5 in my living room already blasted and sitting in primer, so that'll make pics easier. Can show the backs too. Are you looking for the rims or hubacps to finish off yours?

Re: pros and cons 5 lug and 6

Not trying to run away with this thread, but since we are on the subject. I bought A arms and spindles from a 79 chevy that was 5 lug. I thought about going 5 lug for 5 spoke rims, but now thinking twice about it just for the reason markb01 mentioned. So here is my question, can I just swap out the 5 lug rotors and buy 6 lug rotors? Do I change out wheel bearings and caliper too?
It still will be easier than messing with the rear end.

I have 6 lugs all the way around and the only problem that I have run into is trying to find a push through hub cap for the 6 lug rally wheels that I have.

i did a 5 lug swap up front, but have not had luck finding a rear end from a '71-'72, an affordable one atleast. so im just gonna swap to a 6 lug rotor up front. to do this your 5 lug rotor must be 1 1/4" thick and not your tipical 1". luckily for me i have a 1 1/4" rotor, so all i have to do i swap rotors. thats if my research is correct.

Re: pros and cons 5 lug and 6

Ill be the black(mopar)sheep here - Im planning to swap my fronts to the 5lug when I do my drop spindle/disc swap in a few weeks - I dont plan on changing the rear to 5 lug for a looong time (until cash permits) and if/when I do Id probably just do the swap kit that Speedway has. although kinda pricey:

Is it really that big of a deal to run 5lugs up front and 6 in rear?

If they're covered by hubcaps I don't think it is. But like mentioned earlier, you gotta carry around 2 spare tires.

Re: pros and cons 5 lug and 6

i dont rock hubcaps - ive always felt they had something to hide (ahaah dont worry - im at my day job right now)

i dont even carry 1 spare - I meet the best people on the sides of roads

FWIW - My choice will likely be the 5x5 Wheel Vintique 62 series

Im prettu sure they do a 6 lug version too - ill look for a linkie

ha! To each his own.

AFAIK, those 62 series wheels don't come in 6 lug. I wanted to go that route too.

I ran my truck 5 lug front/6 lug rear for a year or two, and carried a 5/6 lug wheel adapter with the spare. I never used it once. After I had the rear axle redrilled to 5 lug I tossed the adapter. Subsequently I quit carrying a spare tire at all. Since the truck never ventures very far from home I just keep a can of Inflata-Spare in the glove box.

If I were going to take another long trip I'd probably toss in the spare and the jack along with a variety of tools, but for local travel it just adds more rattling clutter in the bed.

Does anyone know if the stock 6 lug wheels that came on my 68 will fit over the 6 lug disc brake conversion?

Those are close. But they're smoothies, they don't have the 4 gaps around the center...and they won't take a stock hubcap.

Those artillery rims are sweet.
