straight pipe vs glasspack?

glasspack vs straight pipe? any benefits to the glasspack vs straight pipe flow wise or sound wise? i just took my old muffler off and im loving the roar of the 350 crate, is the pack gonna make a big difference? 8 inches long is the size. also is the myth about burning exhaust valves from straights or packs true? does anyone have any thoughts on that?
Thanks.

Re: straight pipe vs glasspack?

I think it's a myth. I ran straight pipes on my Chevy and it sounded awesome. Glasspacks seem to make them rumble on idle a bit more though.

Re: straight pipe vs glasspack?

I'm abou to send my 59 off to get the exhaust done and it will be glasspacks. I have them on now but the pipes a shot. Years ago when it was in good shape it sounded like an old vette. I could sit there listening to that sucker cackle and drink beer all day.
I'm gonna record the sound on my phone for the ring tone when its done.

On a side note the 392 in my travelall has flowmasters, after an hour in that thing im ready to pull over and hurl.

Re: straight pipe vs glasspack?

My 79 has headers to a cat and then split into duals without mufflers and I love the way it sounds. With the cat you don't get that annoying crackle of a straight pipe.

Re: straight pipe vs glasspack?

i like the sound of straight pipe, depending on the car/engine. you could get the best of both worlds and get a 12" glass pack http://www.summitracing.com/parts/JEX-A4512S/

Burn a valve is a myth.....We run Zoomie headers on high dolla motors and never burn a valve from cold air!......run what sounds good to you.
But on a stock motor you need a little back pressure to make it run better.

Re: straight pipe vs glasspack?

Dont run a Blowmaster. I had them for a month and hated it ,went back with 22 inch glasspacks and 3.5 inch tips and damn! gotta love the old school muscle car sound!

To me, you get alot more tone with glasspacks or straights. I had dual super 40 flows with 2 tips dumped out of each flow in my 70 with a built 355 and it just had a generic sound to it. Resonance was annoying too.

glasspacks gave me a good roar when i step on it ,along with a nice cackle when i let off!

Re: straight pipe vs glasspack?

I installed two 24" cherry bombs on my 80 and sounds good. I was really looking for that old school mellow, powerful sounding tone of days gone by. Everybody used to call them "smittys" and love that sound,,!! I guess they quit making them years ago,,,,

Re: straight pipe vs glasspack?

I have been running these Thrush glasspacks on my 79 C-20 with true duals and I love the added tourque I got and also the sound. They idle good (not too loud) but when you romp on it, everyone around you knows about it! These are straight through with no baffles or louvers like some glasspacks. The inside is smooth and perforated. Sounds much better than straight pipes. Straight pipes make you sound poor.

Also as a rule of thumb with glasspacks, the shorter they are, the louder they are.

i've heard flowmaster exhaust that sounds like hell adn some that sound pretty good. when people put them behind a cat on a stock truck they sound like garbage. when they are on a big cam'd engine with no cats and not stock sized pipes they can sound good.

sounds like doo doo
now they sound crisp and not like your exhaust dumps into a big 55 gallon drum

+1

on my 370HP 383 stroker with long tubes and a X pipe I got that muscle car sound

I had flowtech's, glasspacks & stright pipes but the flow masters sounded the best for my application

just cause some guys dont like them dont mean there bad, just like some people like fords and others like chevy its just preference they do that same job

Re: straight pipe vs glasspack?

I've got 2.5" glasspacks on my 454 which exit in front of the rear tires. I love the sound when I'm coming home and drop it into second. My truck has great farts.

I'll add that my last 1980 CCDRW squarebox had a 454, headers and 2.5" straight pipes that exited out the rear, courtesy of the previous owner, and although I had about 14 feet of pipe to get the sound away from my old deaf ears it got tiring pretty quick. So, on went some glasspacks.
