converting 2wd to a 4 x 4
Hi all
I am new here and need some information. I have begun the process of finding and buying what I have always wanted, a 69 - 72 c-10 which is what my father had when I was a child. I however need a 4wd truck as I plan on using it as my farm/country truck. I am having a great deal of trouble finding a 4 x 4 with power brakes and have recently been told that 69 and 70 K10s cannot have power disc brakes added to the axels. This is unfortunate as I was about ready to buy a beautiful 69 K-10, but non-power drums are not for me as I will need to occasionally pull a trailer or fertilizer buggy. Here are my questions and thank-you for any help that you may have: Does anybody make a front axel, disc brake kit that matches up to any 69-72 c-10 therefore converting a 2wd c-10 to a 4wd? Also, is it possible to use a 71 or 72 front axel and disc brake assembly to bolt into any 69-72? Any help on this topic is greatly appreciated and will look at any truck that fits this description within 2 hours of Louisville, KY |

You cant add PB to closed knuckle axles but open is no problem. "Also, is it possible to use a 71 or 72 front axel and disc brake assembly to bolt into any 69-72?" Yes, easly done. Many have done this in the build section. |

There are conversion kits, but they are very pricey. Its cheaper to just find a newer axle and swap it out. I would find a chevy or dodge front dana 44 from 71-up for the front. The post 71-up will all have disc brakes.

Re: converting 2wd to a 4 x 4
Well since I posted the above message I found a truck on e-bay had been relisted and was close by so yesterday in the snow I went out and bought it and will bring it home tomorrow.
It is a 1972 c-10 Highlander 4 x 4 with power windows (that work), air conditioning, disc brakes and tilt steering. Its got a 350 with TH350 trans. Now on to the rehab... |

Re: converting 2wd to a 4 x 4
The problem with the Dodge is it will be a 5x4.5 wheel pattern? and the hub bearings are VERY weak. That doesnt mean you cant swap out for the chevy knuckles/shafts....then it would just be easier to use a Chevy axle.

Thats crazy. Im right down the road from you. I am almost done with a body swap on my 65 c10. I put it on a 77 k10 chassis. Not a hard swap at all.
