Putting side trim on 72 how in the heck do you get to the nut behind door hinge?

I have finally started putting my freshly painted 72 Chevy back together.I got brand new upper and lower mouldings. How in the world do you get to the back nut on the upper mouldings on fenders behind top door hinge?I was able to get my 1/4" air ratchet in there with a 3/8" socket with nut taped in socket but it liked just a little more to the stud and i can't find the right length extension.I am at a loss.Anybody got any pointers???

Put the moulding on before you put the fender on maybe (?) I'm not sure really .. I have never done it.

Try a gear wrench with the flex head. You are really limited without taking the door off otherwise.

For future reference it's mych easier to do with either the fender off or door off.

The truck was sprayed with the doors and fenders on and i hate like heck to have to take them off after paint just to get 1 nut on.

You can remove the lower fender bolt and pull it out a tad for access; I've done it, but don't pry out too much or you'll lose the fit at the cowl; done that too lol.

Re: Putting side trim on 72 how in the heck do you get to the nut behind door hinge?

I just did this a few months ago.
I used a 1/4 drive flex extension with the right socket.
Any type of small flex drive should work.
Good luck

Re: Putting side trim on 72 how in the heck do you get to the nut behind door hinge?

Im going to have to deal with this too.

Has anyone used 3M trim tape for molding instead of the clips?

I see alot of trucks that the moldings don't align across the door/fender/cab/bed. If tape works it would be easy to mark a nice line after the panels are assembled.

Re: Putting side trim on 72 how in the heck do you get to the nut behind door hinge?

I just installed my original molding back on after removing it in hopes of painting the truck and after the son decided he liked the original paint and look I had the task to install it again. I used the original clips where I could and the places I couls not, such as the places you are referring too I use the red back 3m and then the original clips with rubber shaped pieces I cut out and snapped that in the holes... some small spots of molding adhesive glue too, this way easy off when we diceide to paint later next year but still holding the molding firm in place. there is a lot of ways to do it, just get creative
