Help Fix My Transmission leak!

Ok finally some real evidence of the leak after weeks of trying to find some!! It looks like its coming from this connector (its on the driver side of the trans). So what do I need to get to fix this? Im assuming it just a sealing ring but I would have no clue what to ask for at Advanced Auto...Thanks

That is your speedo cable. There is an o-ring/seal in their I believe that needs to be replaced. I had a '68 Buick with a TH400 that always pissed fluid out of that same spot whenever it was parked. I ended up just buying a whole tranny rebuild kit, but I am sure that you could probably just get that seal.

Re: Help Fix My Transmission leak!

Ok so i did it today!! I took the cable and what was left of the o ring....They didnt have a specific o ring so they just gave me a thick one that fit inside the speedometer cable. I installed it and first of all the speedo doesnt jump anymore so yay! But then i noticed it was still leaking and for good reason....The cable was moving where it went into the screw on connector so it tightened it up real good to make sure it didnt wiggle and sealed good...Now to wait...I wiped it all down and just hope its good...And since I had the cluster out I replaced some bulbs and now need for it to get dark so I can see if some dash lights are working

Re: Help Fix My Transmission leak!

UGH its still leaking!!!!!! It seems more it might be coming from the gear connected possibly and it seems to also be running down the hole plate its connected to so maybe the gasket that connects where you see the blue???? This is pissing me off but i dont see red on the screw on connection much more right where the gear connects in ugh!!! What else do I need? Do I need to take this into someone? If so how much do you think it would cost to have it fixed?

You can take that unit out and take to tranny shop. I took mine to my tranny guy and he replaced seal at no charge. He said it was only a couple of bucks.

Re: Help Fix My Transmission leak!

Here are a few things to check , Look at the picture below and determine if you have the correct gear adapter. If so recheck the bore in the tranny tail stock for any cracks or burs. You will have to obtain the EXACT oring for this adapter a "Part Store" maybe fit will not work

Top is 350 lower is a T5

Also recheck the "Gear" itself for wear , I can't remember from my transmission days if the spiral grove cut on the gear was to help pull fluid back into the tail stock. But if there is too much play it can actually rattle in the bore causing a leak. I don't think there is a tiny o ring inside the adapter but check for it anyway.

Keep in mind the speedo cable runs dry without any help from the transmission fluid in the tail stock. So you can disconnect the cable , clean everything off , and run it safely IN GEAR on a lift preferably to see where the fluid leak is coming from.

Re: Help Fix My Transmission leak!

Ok, So in trying to replace the speedo gear housing I managed to push the entire gear into the tranny....How do I get it back out? Do I need to remove the back end? I know I have to remove the 4 bolts, replace that gasket to get the back part off but that about as much as I know....UGH!!! Im such a newbie
