4 X 4 to 2 X 4 conversion

I have looked at quite a few threads on this subject but none are quite as simple as my project (I hope).
I am going to swap the running gear in a 79 K10 SWB for the running gear from a 78 C10 SWB.
I think that it should be a pretty simple swap, the only difference might be some of the mounting holes and brackets for the front suspension. The good thing for me is that both trucks are complete.
Has anyone done a similar swap, if so did you run into any problems?

The 78 was in a wreck and has some rust on the body and needs paint.
The 79 has high miles but almost no rust and overall really clean and original paint is in great condition.

Re: 4 X 4 to 2 X 4 conversion

I know you will need to change the rear spring hangers to lower the 4x4 to 2wd. I think the arch in the frame rails over the front axles is different. Im sure some of the guys who made 2wd into 4x4's will have some good input on the differences between the 2 frames. I do know some of the 72 and earlier blazer guys took 4x4's and made them into 2wd's. Whats wrong with the 78 frame. I would use the 79 body and switch it to the 2wd frame. Good luck with your project.

The right front portion of the frame is bent about 2" wider at the front.

Why not just do a body swap?

Re: 4 X 4 to 2 X 4 conversion

Hi,

you have to look for the main shaft of the transmission. the main shaft of a transmission in a 4x4 is longer then the one of a 4x2. this is necessary to attach the transfer case.
find this out, while changing my transmission a few month ago. wanted to take one of a C10, doesn´t match.

greeting

chris

Why not sell the 4x4 truck and get a 2wd?
