cutting door panel for speakers

so I am cutting the door panels to install speaker ( I know, ouch, right )and want to know if I need to worry about cutting into anything inside the panel or if the windows rolled down will hit the back of the speakers. Guys who have done this let me know and let me know how big of speaker the door panel will accomadate

I'll try and remember to post a picture later tonight when I get home as I've got 2 doors without skins on right now. The bottoms of the door are pretty wide open, not much to hit.

i've had a couple of trucks that had 6X9 speakers cut into the lower doors with no problems with the windows fuctioning

i don't think the window goes down far enough to hit anything.

ok thanks guys, I think either 6x9 in the doors and some 5 1/2 in the panels below the dash then the amp and sub under the seat.

as long as you keep them low and forward you're safe.. i cut a van door high and had to get a new door panel.. remove the panel cut, feel behind the cut prior the making the cut,, don't know what you're cutting with but if you have a simple jig saw, use a short metal blade..

........or you could get the behind the seat corner speaker mount sold by one of the members here (i think they were 6x9's) and put a mid in the kick panel and a tweeter somewhere in front and you would have better separation, perhaps less tinny sound and NO BIG CUT HOLES in your doors....
i guess then the big question would be if you are still running the cab gas tank...
just sayin.

I put a 6x9 3-way low and toward the front of the door, then stacked a 6in round 2-way a little higher on the door right above the 6x9...no problem. There is a brace in the door close to where I cut the hole for the round speaker, just missed the brace when I cut the hole.

Here's a picture of the inside of a door. The support in the center is as low as the window would go.

yes I seen those and I also have the tank still but I do have a tank for the under too, but not going to remove it until summer.... but even then my sone wants all subs in the rear.... I have mids and tweets too, so I think 6x9 door, amp sub under the seat and mis and tweets some where up front for now

I had a 72 C-10 with 6X9 speakers in the lower door panels and then I also put a set of 6" round speakers in the sheetmetal finsh piece behind the seat. I cut the holes and installed one on each side of the truck just below the rear window. You wilol have to use a speaker with a shollow magnet design.

On the 68 C-10 that I am working on, I plan on putting a pair of 4X6 speakers in the rear pillar on each side of the cab, like the 88-99 trucks were made.

cutting doors, I don't mind... drilling and cutting other spots in cab, same thing for me too.... so i guess there is some good options and space even know I have the tank in the cab, so thanks guys for the needed information

might not enter into play... but I switched over to a one piece window. and the window track (not glass) gets in the way. you might be OK with a small mag. speaker but I don't think mine are going to fit.

I wont know for sure until I start putting everything in this weekend.

if you you have your vents, it looks liks there is tons of room...

So how do you run the speaker wires through the door gap?

I run my wires like you see newer cars set up with grommets and wire loom ran through offset holes. Or you can buy these for about $15



Drill one hole higher than the other and the conduit sits upright.

Just make sure the holes aren't too far apart so the conduit can stretch enough to open your doors all the way. If you want to get real trick, they also make contact magnets so you don't have wires. But then your windows and speakers don't work with the doors open.
