Did I get ripped off (Trans Rebuild)

I dropped off my truck that had been sitting for years to a local Transmission shop. It had to be rebuilt and the bill is $954. I know I paid way less than that years ago for a rebuilt tranny and installation. Is that crazy, or is it just me? It's a 2 wheel drive BTW.

Re: Did I get ripped off (Trans Rebuild)

Sounds about right for a rebuild that includes removall and installation. Bench rebuilds are around $600, at least for the th400 I recently had rebuilt.

Re: Did I get ripped off (Trans Rebuild)

you could have bought a new trans for about the same price and installed it yourself.

Re: Did I get ripped off (Trans Rebuild)

The shop labor price per hour is the thing that really adds up quickly.

Around here, shops are charging $80 an hour on average. Figure 4 hours to remove and then another 4 hours to install the trans, that's $640 in labor charges. Another $100 in parts for the rebuild and 2~3 hours for the rebuild job.

$900 sounds about right.

OK, I feel better now. Thanks everybody. Everything I've done with this truck was more than 10 years ago, so I'm having sticker shock at every turn.

Re: Did I get ripped off (Trans Rebuild)

Everyone is having sticker shock these days....

I had to buy a set of tires for my wife's Corolla. The cheapest name brand tire that I could find for 195X65X15 was like $80 a tire. So the set of tires ended up being $400 after tax and fees.

Back in the 90's, I remember when a set of car tires used to only cost around $250 for the cheapies and $300 for the Goodyears.

Don't even get me started on car batteries.... You can't buy a battery less than $80 these days.

Re: Did I get ripped off (Trans Rebuild)

Yes everything is expensive these days, but I have a question for you. Did you not ask how much when you dropped it off? I'm not picking on you, but as high as everything is these days it pays to "shop" around. That means parts, services, whatever. I want to know exactly what it's going to cost, cause I hate to get surprised or ripped-off.

Re: Did I get ripped off (Trans Rebuild)

That is a valid question, and I probably should have handled it differently. I originally took it in to have him replace the rear-main seal. My thinking was that they drop tranny's often and it would be the best bet. Once they had the Tranny out, he discovered it was a two piece seal and didn't feel comfortable changing it. So I was already on the hook for the labor to remove the transmission. If I had him put it back together to take it somewhere cheaper, it probably would have been a wash.

Re: Did I get ripped off (Trans Rebuild)

Someone said 4 hours to pull the tranny and then 4 to install. In reality it should be booked as maybe 4 hours total which is $320 leaving you with a $550 dollar rebuild (not a killer deal but not a bad deal either) the rest is taxes.....

Re: Did I get ripped off (Trans Rebuild)

I paid $600 to have my TH350 re-built about 6 mo ago... pulled it out, and re-installed myself..

$300 is about right for labor and taxes these days

Re: Did I get ripped off (Trans Rebuild)

If I could've found a good rebuilt one 'round here, I would've definantly done a swap job myself. But as it was, I needed it done. He came out and picked it up one evening (45 miles one way), took it to the shop, and I had it the morning of day two. Total cost was about $1,300 for a 700r4...

Re: Did I get ripped off (Trans Rebuild)

Alot of trans shops rip people off.... You need to find a good shop thats been in buisness for 40 years. I just called the local trans shop that I have used in the past with good results before I started doing them myself. They get $650-750 for a 2wd 700r4 overdrive and $500-700 for a regular th350 and closer to $700 if its a th350c. Thats you dropping it off and picking it up a week later. They will even make the speedo read correct if its off. Last car I had them do was a 76 elcamino that I swapped a 700r4 in, I had them Put a more performance orientated torque converter and a corvette servo in it and they even wired up my lock up converter and made it work when it shifted into 4th. Cost me $800 out the door.

Re: Did I get ripped off (Trans Rebuild)

Goo price in my opinon. I paid 1300 Canadian for a TCI 9" t350 and did teh work myself when I could have paid 1400 and had a shop build it to my specifiction.
Next time, the shop get its. This last time, was just for learning.
