Re: 85 carb ?
When you say gas around the front of the carb, you mean on the outside of it? Possible that the float level is off or the float is saturated and not stopping the flow of fuel at the needle and seat causing it to flood and stall.... When was the last time it was overhauled? I'd pick up a kit from the local auto parts and do an overhaul on it. Fairly cheap....

Re: 85 carb ?
The '85 carb has an "extra" accelerator pump. That's what the plug on top is for.
The 17083204 is an '83 Chevy automatic trans carb. The extra numbers are date codes. I feel your pain. I'm not a mechanic by any means, and carb work might as well be witchcraft. I'm going thru carb issues right now too! You need to find an old timer mechanic that has actually worked on a carb for any help in my area.

Re: 85 carb ?
I'm no carb mechanic but I am getting close to old timer status. If it's a Quadra jet they are know to leak a little around the the top of the carb. Just the gasket "seeps" a little. Just enough to keep the top and front of the carb kind of moist. No real problem. Second, the way you say it's acting I would replace the fuel filter.I had one once that I could drive it for 4 to 5 miles are so and then it would slowly die out. After it sat for a couple of minutes it would fire back up and go some more. Replaced the fuel filter and it fixed the problem. If it's a clear filter don't look at it and think enerythings fine if you don't see any trash or sludge. Just go ahead and replace it and try that.
One other thing about Q-jets. The fitting where the fuel line screws into the carb will sometimes strip the threads or will eventually start leaking where someone before you has cross threaded the part. There is also a small fule filter inside that fitting. Take it out and throw it away and install a fuel filter in your fuel line.

Re: 85 carb ?
If the threads turn out to be stripped, you can buy a self taping fitting from the Help! section at your auto parts store. I bought one from O'Reilly's.
