Does anyone know roughly how much it cost to paint one of there truck if you paint on your own? Just standard truck longbed, and in a solid color such as black?

Re: Painting

It will depend alot on the brand of paint you pick and the amount of body work you have to do. Dupont , PPG also have a lower lines like Nason and Omni that are a little cheaper. I have heard good things about Kirker paints and smartshopper.com has a kit of Kirker and it is cheap.

Re: Painting

Just a point of contention, form someone that has black vehicles. If you paint it black, EVERY dent, dimple, and flaw will stand out. Black is nasty about that, unless you do it in a flat color. Lighter colors give an impression of less imperfections.

If you decide on a dark color, then do a little more prep on your body and it will look great.

Thats a good point, any flaw in the body work and the paint job will stand out big time. Black would be my last choice in a paint job.

I don't really care that much about flaws because it will be a work truck. The truck is already black, but it I will replacing body parts so it will be repainted.

Re: Painting

I did not do the actual spraying of the paint, but I was the guy that prepped the hood and then did the finish snading and buffing. I was in the booth at the time of the painting with my buddy.

Re: Painting

This truck doesn't see as much driving as it used to, but the speedo has turned over twice in it's life. I did the full 2010 Power Tour in it. I have changed the wheels and the tail lights in it since these pics.

Re: Painting

I have roughly $2000 in paint and body work supplies (body filler, primer, paint, clear, sand paper, sand paper, sand paper, sand paper and sand paper. Did I already say sand paper? This is how far I have gotten so far. I have enough supplies left to paint my doors and fenders (and maybe the hood, we'll see).

Re: Painting

Awesome truck and great work, I like that red a lot. Looks like my truck probably won't be painted for a while.

Re: Painting

The actual cost is relative to what has to be done if you have to strip some parts to bare metal not only will you need the stuff to strip it but you will also need the epoxy primer to go over bare metal. The cost of a gallon of eprime and the activator is like 150. Then there is the next primer step, high-build primer. You will need this type of primer in just almost every instnce of a paint job weather it is a retoreration or just a repaint. Once agian plan on 100 to 150 here for a gallon and the activator it is not the same as the eprime ones. Next is the base coat the kind of paint I use cost me about 60bucks a gallon and you need a reducer at like 40. Then the clear and harderner[the reducer is the same for base as it is clear]is costing another 150 or so. Now I am not real sure on thse prices as I have rounded on some and I also get a body shop price that could be as much as 30% in some cases on different stuff just depending on what it is. Also the paint I use is Omni brand it is the shopline for the PPG people. I went thru all that to type to you I'm sorry I can't help you much. Jim

Actually that helps me a lot. It's okay though painting is as of right now a last priority.

Re: Painting

I'm 1300 into materials and and 28 hrs into labor this covers everything but the bed and not what I've done stripping, welding sanding, mudding, re-mudding..... Probably do not have enough paint left. I just do the dumb work everything else my painter does. Materials are like GOLD
