Oil filter to have or not to have that is my question...
I currently purchased a 1960 SWB Step side. I get it to the house after digging it out and run to the parts store to get a few things to get it going. I get the normal oil and filter - plugs and wires etc. and when I get home I get ready to change the oil and WOW no oil filter. Well I have always been a V-8 Chevy guy this is my first 6 shooter and all the info I have found on the internet says it was a option that one could take or leave. I looked around and found the canister on EBAY AC SC 660 and it is $680 to my door . So I guess my question is who is not running a oil filter or is it something that was taken off my truck that I need to replace. Thanks for your help.

Yep, the 235/261's didn't come from GM with oil filters. The ones that you do see on them were an add on canister filter that is clamped to the intake manifold. I would definitely add a oil filter to your engine. I can't help with where to get one, but I'm sure someone here will chime in and either have one, or know where to get one for much less $$ than that one on ebay. You could probably just get a single remote oil filter mount for a spin on, and just have a couple hoses made to plumb it up.

if it is the original motor i doubt an oil filter is going to prolong it's lifespan from what has happened to it in the last 50years

Wow! I did not know that? I guess I've never had to work on one of those engines but I wouldn't change it. Make some money betting people that they can't find the oil filter cannister.
I agree with Cdowns that a filter at this point is not going to help much. I think what I would do, if it was my vehicle and it was running okay, is to leave it as is and change the oil more frequently. Maybe every 1500 to 2000 miles. |

You all have been helpful ~ Thanks. I think I'm going to leave well enough alone and drive it as is. I know one day I'll have to rebuild the motor and I'll put a filter on it then.

I would use CD2 Detergent ( Amazon.com: CD2 4111 Oil Detergent. 15 oz.:...) in place of one of the quarts of oil to help clean all of the internal passages.
