best ever weekend find

in all my years of doing this, I have never found a better beginning to a truck build.
1964 custom, bbw short fleet, rebuilt 4-bolt '72 350 with corvette numbers, rebuilt turbo 350 short, c-notched, 2" x 5" drop spring drop, 2 1/2" spindles.

Aluminum rad., ps & pb, zero rust (had to be garaged) great original grill and bumpers. probably would have had great patina but PO sprayed grey and black primers.

all the hard stuff is done... damn, I'm gonna enjoy this one.

Re: best ever weekend find

Greetings from Fayetteville NC. Looks like a great truck. I love the short beds. You'll be miles ahead the project by getting a rust free truck. Congrats

That is awesome man! I would definitely take a weekend and wet sand all that primer off.

Re: best ever weekend find

Instead of wet sanding it, why not try lacquer thinner and wipe it off? You won't (shouldn't) affect the paint under it that way.

Re: best ever weekend find

i have a 1964 short bed that i have a big window for it.Theses old short beds look better to me with the big back window.I'm really looking at the 1964 to do the C notch in the rear and lower the front end 2 inches.even tho i'm not a lowering type of a guy I like the stock height. But the 1964--66 short beds look good lowered

Mine came with a small window But have a 1966 big window 3/4 ton

That looks like either spray can or lacquer primer, so you should be able to use some lacquer thinner and wipe it off without damaging the original paint. IF that does have the original paint or an old paint job under the primer.

I think you're right, probably rattlecan. I will test wipe tonight and see what happens.

Lacquer thinner could work.. maybe too well. I'd try milder solvents first. I've heard Goof Off works on some rattle can paints and won't touch the factory stuff. Here's hoping for awesome original patina!

Re: best ever weekend find

In regards to the primer : The firewall on my shortbox project was rattle canned black. When I went to pressure wash it, I used gunk engine degreaser and the paint just washed right off. This might help you, it might not.

By the way, excellent score!!

speaking of firewalls... did you notice on the motor photo that the PO had spray canned the firewall engine orange... nice. hope that washes off too.

Re: best ever weekend find

ok... tried wiping off with mineral spirits, tried dupont 3812, tried lacquer thinner. nothing worked. then lightly sanded 400 wet. theres no paint under the primer. must have been sanded off before primed.

i like well preserved patina, but rust, not so much. to me when there's more rust than aged paint, it's not really patina, just rust.

agree or not... this truck deserves to be pretty. I'm thinking original color with a high quality paint job.

unfortunately that means cab off, to do it right.

question:
has anyone tried a max-static lowered stance with really tall widewhites.
say 4.5" front x 5" rear and 16" steelies with 31" tires?

very curious about the look.
